I absolutely love The Long Dark. My favourite survival game. You can try a lower difficulty.

I think my First shooter game was Halo Combat evolved iirc, thought there might have been some random one i played on the PS1, honestly cant remember.

I only ever play with the SO and we've gone up without much issue.

I suspect it's a badly-coded ROM, not an official product.

Shame, it was always a good laugh.

Thinking about the first shooter thing though, now that i think about it again, halo was not my first shooter, i remember demos of Quake, and some game similar to it, but it was set in like Ancient Egypt or something iirc, and a demo for Doom on the PS1, so i think one of those was actually my first shooter that i played.
