I've been playing for 18 months and I haven't bothered going that high, but depending on how determined you are, how lucky you are, and how good the current rank cheese happens to be, you could probably manage it in a couple weeks.

That's faction rank BTW, not Pilots Federation rating. So if you want to get the Cutter and the Corvette, you first have to grind rank with the Empire and then with the Federation.

The only people who say that are the ones who are too cowardly to pick a fight with anything other than a complete newbie or an unarmed trade ship.

That won't help materially if they decide they want to gank you, but it's satisfying to know how pathetic they are. Oh, you used exploits to get top-end kit in two days, then banded together with three friends to kill one unarmed, unshielded T7? Yeah, you're a real man.

I do mostly play in Open, though. My experiences with other players have been mostly good.

Not to mention, they're probably noob dummies that started playing Elite with Dangerous.

The online component was not at all present for any of the Elite games up until now.

I get the feeling someone that actually played the old games would not really care at all about open play and would find the game annoying with so many people crowding it.

Not to mention... All the trolling that wasn't there before.

I've also only ever played in Solo mode. I only fight others on the side, whenever I'm entering or leaving civilized space. I have zero interest in my exploration game being ruined by other players. I enjoy the serenity that E:D has to offer.

Yeah... Those rustbuckets allegedly wrecked those same epic ships on Alioth, and are definitely wrecking things in the actual game, with the Alliance being the largest singular faction in the game.

Also... I'm a little confused by the powerplay system.

Why does the Alliance, with it's many many systems, have only one internal faction, while the Feds and the Imps have 3-4 factions controlling different sections of the Sol Quadrant and therefore collectively being larger than the Alliance?
