I swear I'm going to strangle this lady in her sleep. The job was meant to be simple: Accept contract from rich lady, ferry rich lady from point A to point B, Receive payment and fuck-off. Not help rich lady with her shopping list or errands; I've become a glorified chauffeur. On top of that, and outside of me having to buy things she wants out of my money, I jump into a system with a bloody pulsar.

Now, you may ask why that's such a big deal in E:D and I shall tell you. You see, E:D tries to remain very accurate with their mechanics, notably the stars. Pulsars are, besides blackholes, the absolute fucking worse thing you can run into. Not only they are blindingly bright, but you have but a few seconds to slow down from several times the speed of light or else the gravity well of these monstrosities will pull you out of supercruise, and start wreaking havoc on your ship. Your systems, your shields, your hull, EVERYTHING gets fucked. I overheated over 120% causing my dash to start sparking and smoking. After I hightailed it out, I got to enjoy the thing from a safe distance. Then jumped once my ship was no longer melting.

What else could go wrong you may ask? Well, I arrive at the destination! Yes, you read that right. Over 30LY and an hour of playtime and I have finally arrived at this lady's destination. Guess what it is? No, seriously, guess. It's a fucking Visitor Beacon. What's that? It's like a sign that tells you some info about the system, that's it. Now, we'll ignore the fact that I wasn't paying attention and accidentally ran into the bugger, and pay attention more to the fact that these beacons are very small. They don't have landing pads, nope, nada. They're just floating signs of info. In this case, this lovely beacon told me about how this lone planet in this solar system was an ocean world with life. That's it. See the problem yet? I can't leave the lady here. That means, oh yes, MISSION UPDATE.

"That'll do, Commander. Now on to the next destination."

Wat.

So now guess where we're going? Over 170 -- yes, you read that right, OVER 170LY to a system called Niju. So this isn't A to B, Oh no, It's A to Z with every flipping letter in the god damn alphabet. Why does she want to go here you may ask? Another visitor beacon, of course. Nevermind the fact I'm nearly out of fuel. On top of that, and on my way towards a military station (picture below) for fuel, I get interdicted by someone. THANKFULLY, I escape interdiction because momma is in a Viper MKIV. So fuck you whoever tried to interdict me, you ain't gettin' none my paint.

So, I've begrudgingly accepted my fate, even though I am now cursing under my breath what on Cubeo I did to deserve this. I'm just a smuggler. Sure, I had a bit of a leaning towards the Empire, and sure I worked for them for a time, but I rescinded my loyalty in favour of more lucrative... and profitable work. I have peddled everything from slaves to weapons, propaganda to intel. I'm a simple person, I just need the money. And this is what I have to deal with -- all for a mere 740K in credits.

If I had the option, I would leave this lady at a random station in a random system. But the sad fact is that I have not made many friends. In fact, I've a few outstanding fines, notably from the Federation, that I need to pay, and upgrades that I need for my ship. Lord help me.

On the plus side, I have taken some nice pictures.

Our DESTINATION

Why so far!?

Bloody hell that thing is bright

Muthafuckkin Pulsars are evil -- and yes, they do spin

A binary system!

Gas giant with some rings, and even a shadow on the rings! Keep in mind that I do play in ultra, no idea if it'd be rendered otherwise.

A military station in a neutral system where I needed to refuel

I've taken a contract for this lady who wants to sightsee on a 27LY trip, the reward for completion is 747K credits. On the plus side, she's not very anal about time, she's laid back so she won't bitch if I take my time (though I still only have 12 hours to complete the contract). However, she's an outright demanding bitch, dear lord. Buy this, buy this, buy this, go here, go here. I'm not made of money lady. I wish I could stuff her into my heatsink and eject near a star.

You've actually made Elite sound hilarious and desirable, I can bus crochety old women around exploding supernovae because that's apparently what they want to spend their child's inheritance on.

You want to know how big this game is?

The Milky Way Map

Yes, that is our Milky Way. Yes, you can travel it all. In fact, over 40 players embarked on a trip over 6 months ago to try and reach the centre of the galaxy. Yes, it is that massive. How massive?

In Elite: Dangerous the galaxy is scientifically accurate and includes around a 100 billion star systems (around 400 billion stars considering most systems contain multiple stars). The Elite Universe is modeled on current galactic charts.

400 billion stars you can actually visit. Over 120,000LY you can travel.

As far as my little task, I've a little less than 12 hours to finish this contract. I need the money, so it looks like I'll be playing for the next few hours. OTL

This whole Elite: Dangerous ordeal is actually amazing. Screw real science, this discovery after THREE YEARS is amazing. They're apparently a race from the VERY FIRST Elite game in 1984.

There is also a video of it.

I dunno why but I'm nerding out so much about this.

Also a story about it

Edit: A comment I found:
"They're also the only known beings who can yank you during a Hyperspace (System to System) Jump like that, In Lore, there was a rather costly and large war between the various human factions and the Thargoids. It didn't go well for either side basically."

Another:
"Imagine you're playing Destiny.

You're farming in an instance you've been through hundreds of timed. Then suddenly something different happens. Something totally fucking bonkers. Imagine if that thing only happened to 2 people out of the entire population of players, and that event is set to have drastic consequences on the future of Destiny.

That's kinda what's happening right now."

Right so im going to be starting Elite Dangerous tonight as my loan came in and it was only 20 quid for the base game on the xbox one, so any tips or pointers from people who play it? Or a good youtuber to watch for a beginners guide or something.

When Yahtzee played it for his Drown Out series on Youtube, he played the PC version on controller, but said there weren't enough buttons to map all controls. So the controls may have been cut down for a controller release (the button he couldn't map was landing gear, so be interesting to see what was streamline, or what useless tat Yahtzee was using).

I'm using an Xbox 360 controller for my PC. Most controls are brought down. You can remap the landing gear, I just keep mine on L. Also, screw this lady. I've been at this for over 7 hours. She wanted me to do another 297LY trip -- roughly 60 jumps. So I did it. Just got there, and now she wants me to do a 314LY to another beacon. I abandoned it, I'm too tired. I'll give it another go when I'm more awake and not running off 3 hours of sleep.

And IIRC, that's kinda player 'founded' from one of the expedition teams that went that way. It was just added to the lore and what not.

Oh, they spin. Not all stations do, but these and the weird die looking ones do. They're using centrifugal force to simulate gravity so that they can build like that.

Another thing I should point out to people if you're curious about buying Elite: Dangerous. It's not pay to win. It was suggested in early alpha, and the community was very staunchly against it, so the devs decided not to. The only thing you can buy with real world money are cosmetics for your ships. So that 146 million credit Anaconda you want? Yeah, you have to work for it. It should also be noted that the economy is player driven, and faction conflicts, etc, will affect prices, supply and demand, and even legalisation of commodities. As a result, there's many sites to help people peddling goods, both legal and illegal. These are the two I mainly use.

http://roguey.co.uk/elite-dangerous/trade-helper/

You're going to die a lot at first. That's fine. Pay attention to where you're going, who controls what, etc. Also, never buy ships that are over half of the balance you have. You have to pay for insurance should you lose it, and lots of people will go out, buy a Cobra fighter the moment they can afford it, get it destroyed, and have to go all the way back to square one because they didn't check to see if they could afford the replacement cost. Other than that, the game is a 'do-what-you-want' simulator. Some people join up in factions, others act as traders, there's miners, bounty hunters and mercs, cruiseliners, and smugglers (Hi!).

I'm sad because I lost out at 740K credits, but there was no way I could keep doing it. Thankfully, there's usually always passenger contracts somewhere.

Shit, I still need to pop out to Beagle Point.

Anyway, to go with the "don't fly without rebuy" tip (RULE NUMBER ONE OF ELITE), you should all be made aware of the Fuel Rats. If you're ever at a point where you don't have enough fuel to get to another system, contact them. They will save your life.

I never realised Elite was this community-driven. I guess this explains the online-only mechanics. Are they trying to be "EVE, but you only pay once"?

Yup. I've thought for a while about joining them, but haven't got around to it. Had to call them, one time. Took a big, expensive ship out for a joyride, didn't bother putting a fuel scoop on, and forgot that it could only dock at proper starports and not outposts.

Much less spreadsheets. :P

Its massively community driven. And the Horizons DLC adds planetary landings, rovers, fighter craft NPC pilots you can hire and soon the ability to get out and walk around your ship, the stations, and EVA. Theyre also planning an update where plays can join on person's ship as a copilot or whatnot.

Planetary landings, I feel the need to point out, are currently limited to planets without an atmosphere. Atmospheric landing (and I think space legs) are coming in a future paid expansion.

I am playing Project Snowblind. Has anybody else played this game? It's supposed to be a part of the Deus Ex series, but it has 2 major differences from the other installments.
1. The plot is extremely simple and basic. Basically, there is a war in Honk Kong, and the player is a soldier who gets wounded in the prologue. After that the soldier receives the first augmentations (like Adam Jensen) and there is the mandatory part in a quest hub. What ensues after that is nothing more than several hours of gunfights, explosions, mayhem and carnage. The main character (whatever his name is) travels through Hong Kong leaving behind a trail of dead bodies, and he even makes several full circles around the city (because some locations are revisited). There are no plot twists, no character development, no conspiracy theories, nothing!
2. The gameplay still has the trademark hacking and vent crawling elements of Deus Ex, but some other aspects of the game were changed drastically. There are no branching dialogues, but that's not surprising considering how these segments were not so brilliant in the first 2 games either (Human Revolution improved them a lot). The biggest difference is that the player constantly has to use the standard assault rifle a lot and there is also no way of pacifying enemies (since the game is set in the middle of an actual full-scale war). Also, the invisibility augmentation is still there but it's much less useful than in the other installments.
