This big update for Heroes Of The Storm is awesome. Got 20 free champs, a shit-ton of free skins, some misc awesomeness. Blizzard is way more generous that Riot. Almost glad they permabanned me.

I got about 7 or 8, myself, but it was still a good haul. I opened up two different tints of Judgement Uther, and a bunch of other sick skins.

Playing PvE in Armored Warfare after the utterly toxic 0.19 update (personal definitions of what an update actually is supposed to be may vary) has become disgusting, since earlier all kinds of cheats were enabled for the bots in order to make the game 'less boring'. Now they added even more intense levels of frustration by adding anti tank guided missiles to the arsenal of the AI tanks and fighting vehicles, with amazing results. Also it is a joy to be hit by AI hostiles that have spotted you and automatically hit you for maximum damage while they themselves remain invisible for as long as possible. Mail.ru seems to use a business model based upon the principle of "if it's broken, break it even harder". The levels of deliberate fuckery are truly amazing since the last two updates.

It includes marketing costs but that's still insane. I don't think any game had a bigger budget back then. That's over 200 million today when adjusted for inflation.

These days, north of $200 million for dev and marketing isn't that unusual, actually; at least in the AAA section of the market. FF7 may have been mildly ahead of the average in the 90s, but not by that much. And they really did have a downright excessive marketing push, so the dev part of the budget was probably relatively comparable to other big releases at the time. It was likely that ridiculously huge marketing campaign that really drove the final budget cost so high. The TV ad slots they were buying were definitely not the cheap ones!

I think your idea of video game development costs is a bit inflated. Star Wars: The Old Republic had a development cost north of 200 million and it was one of the most expensive games ever made. Some of the more expensive games in recent years like Destiny or Disney Infinity weren't near that. Most games aren't anything near that.

Some of the more expensive games in recent years like Destiny or Disney Infinity weren't near that. Most games aren't anything near that.

I haven't been referring to just the development costs for the games, but to the total combined for development and promotion. It's the marketing that really costs and arm and a leg, easily as much if not more than the development cost of the game itself, at least at the AAA end where they have the money for big marketing campaigns. Indie and smaller studios haven't got the marketing and have to rely more heavily on word of mouth and Youtubers and stuff rather than advertising blitzes.

Just watched the new Call of Duty trailer. Amazingly, they will crap out a WWII shooter seemingly based around D-Day to VE Day, entirely uninspired and pretty obviously an admission that Battlefield 1 had the right idea.

I might still play it. It looks to be based around the 1st Infantry Division, and my first COD game was Big Red One(not that I've particularly kept up with COD), so there's the nostalgia factor.

The numbers I've been throwing out include both marketing and dev costs.

Even today it's not normal for total costs to be more than 200 mil.

As much as I'd love to jump on the Star Citizen hate train, I have to ask: do you have a news source?

I can't find anything that says anything like that: not on the news sites I frequent, the RSI website, the Star Citizen subreddit, nor Kickstarter itself.

So maybe it's more of an unorthodox funding campaign but here's what I saw mentioned.

You have to get your friends to buy the $40 starter package.

That reddit post leaves out something big with the referral campaign. The first is the math (To have a chance at winningw you'd need to make something like ~300k worth of referals) and also the big one which is they listed their favorite streamers codes in the video announcing it which is not only really unfair to the loads of people not large streamers of the game but also of questionable legality.

I backed SC at ~150 level back in 2012 and bumped it up to 300 over the following year and half (buying shit for friends and such). I backed for one reason. Squadron 42 a proper successor to the Wing Commander games of old. The PU was a bonus. Somehwere to dickaround in after I beat the game. That reason was due out in fall of 2014 I'm willing to accept delays and was giving them the benefit of the doubt. I was optimistic up through 2015 (Despite being bummed at CIG turning from a small passionate team into a corporate machine). Citizencon 2015 got me hyped but then the next year was nothing on the reason I pledged besides Chris Roberts putting his wife on the same level as Marc Hamil and Gary Oldman as notable Actors appearing in in the game. Last citizen-con and one of the more recent sales really pissed me off. You have a special pre-sale to the whales the day before the event and then when the event comes there's fucking nothing. Then they released a "new" ship aka one that had been put to a fan vote three years ago but lost to a different concept. At the time it was a "starter" ship. Probably would have been 50-60 bucks plus game package. They released it this year. 150 with no game package. Its a fucking cash grab at this point. They're trying to take in as much money as they can before it collapses because they know they have nothing to show for it. And you know what the real icing on the cake is? You know how many single player AAA space games there have been that are actually about piloting a star fighter? Zero. People hype about ED, COD:IW and ME:A and all the other big space games that have come out over the past few years but not a single one of them has been the kind of game the Squadron 42 was supposed to be. Right now I'm just hoping that Chris Roberts pulls a freelancer. Sell everything to another company that will use the pieces to shit something resembling a game out. The pieces are there but CiG would rather milk the whales who bought in for the PU with slightly upgraded and slightly flashier demos than put together everything into the actual game that people from the original campaign backed for./rant. I'd say Derek smart was right all along but I think it would be more accurate to say he's not wrong. His allegations of ties to the fucking mafia aren't exactly something I take seriously.


Also regarding another kickstarter. They'd never do that. Their site has a built in funding system that has kept them going for the past 4 1/2 years, the only reason they had a kickstarter back in 2012 was because their site got overloaded. They have better infrastructure now so there's no reason to use a third part platform. Plus Kickstarter has terms and conditions about delivering a product and CiG knows that they couldn't meet those terms
