It is only natural that, having today written countless descriptions of the imagined landscapes of this imagined Scythian land (some of which I’ve yet to publish), I should find the time to listen to the versatile Prokofiev, a gentleman of the avant-garde who nevertheless retains my admiration and liking; his occasional craziness of style, even I will admit, has its charm. Continuing with the Russians, I will listen to Rachmaninoff’s Isle of the Dead, Op. 29, which is necessary to wash out the fashionable work of his aforesaid compatriot.
