Postby The North Italian Republic » Mon Aug 01, 2016 11:58 pm

OH MY GOD ITS ALMOST HERE

HEEEEEEELLLOOOOOO PS4 AND PC COMMUNITY!!!! We are getting a new game next Tuesday. No Man's Sky. The biggest game ever. Literally. This is a form for general discussion about No Man's Sky and the No Man's Sky community. READ THE RULES.

1. Be nice to your fellow human. It would be great if I don't see 1,000 comments just being "THIS IS GAY."

2. DO NOT POST SPOILERS!!!! Many people have been trying to avoid spoilers. Don't ruin it.

3. Follow the general rules. Seriously, don't be the guy to get the form locked.

And instead of just saying "looks sucky" or "looks like sh*it," please EXPLAIN.

I have a sneaky feeling its going to disappoint loads of people. The pay to win elements already mean what little hype I had for it is gone.

People are going to be disappointed as fuck with this game due to all the hype and delayed release. Not saying the game will be bad, i dont have much interest in it, but it will not be as good as many wanted it to be imo

I assume you mean the delay from June to next Tuesday correct? That did receive a lot of anger, I think it did the game good in the long run. It eliminated some major bugs that may have broke the game.

That's still not an explanation... Its an exploration game. What good would it do if you finished it after 50 hours?

I don't have very high hopes for this. The game looks a lot like Spore, the leaked gameplay footage I saw looked... bad, and I think it's going to be just as disappointing -- a galaxy wide and an inch deep. The day one review embargo in particular makes me think that the devs are hoping to hide that the game is bad until everyone who's going to buy it on day one has already given them their money.

It's also not actually doing anything all that innovative. Pretty much everything the game is doing has already been done (and done miles better) by Spore, Elite (not just Elite: Dangerous, mind -- I mean Frontier: Elite II, which is a game older than I am), or Dwarf Fortress.

Spore is WAY different then NMS. And they are just trying to prevent spoilers from getting out like what that guy did. I've never heard of Elite before, so idk about that.

The end game of Spore is disturbingly similar to the entire goal of No Man's Sky. Which is scary, because the end game of Spore wasn't good with how drawn out it was, and this is the entire concept of the game.

It seems pretty silly if that's the reason, considering that the objective is to get to the center and that you start on the rim of the galaxy, if I recall correctly. There's hardly going to be any major spoilers if the player is starting that far out from the objective.

I'm specifically referring to the creature-generating elements of Spore and the space stage -- where part of the plot was getting to the center of the galaxy (to fight the Grox, admittedly, which I don't think NMS has anything like that). The creatures look and move like Spore creatures with slightly updated graphics.

And day one review embargos are never about spoilers. They're about reviewers not being able to say whether they think the game is good or not until after a bunch of hyped people have already spent $60.00 or more on it. I don't quibble with the DMCA claims taking down the leaks -- any studio would do that. I'm complaining about the embargo preventing anyone from posting a review of the game until after the first day (presumably -- the date of the embargo's lifting is also, apparently, embargoed), which ensures huge numbers of people will buy the game without being allowed to compare opinions on whether or not it's even good. This is a bit worrying from what is, essentially, a AAA game -- despite the "indie" studio developing NMS, Sony's money is all over the project.

Elite is a video game franchise from the late 80s. Elite II, in 1993, was the first game to have realistic procedurally generated planets, and also included a 1:1 scale model of the Milky Way. It was a bit like the concept of NMS except set in our own galaxy and there was a lot more to do than explore. A new Elite game, Elite: Dangerous, came out in 2014 (I think? Maybe 2013) and is essentially an updated version of Elite II as an MMO set about a hundred years later and not built on DOS. A lot of the groundwork NMS is building its space sim on was originally laid by David Braben and Frontier with the Elite games back in the 90s.

But isn't game's focus is all about exploration and endless discovery? Let's not be dismayed on how fast it is to finish it.

The player is supposed to reach the centre of the universe - that you can do other things doesn't take away from that. I can spend hundreds of hours in GTAV without doing a single main story mission, that doesn't mean that the story isn't the main focus of the game.

Of course, the way the player who beat the game in 30 hours beat it is easily fixable. Just massively reduce the price of the item he exploited to get massive amounts of currency to upgrade his ship.

At this point it's reached such unsustainable levels of hype in the community that I feel there's no way it can deliver. That being said, I've bee approaching it with caution and not getting overly invested in it. We'll see what the reviews say. I still think the game looks cool and has potential.

I love mindless exploration games, so even if it's not great, I'll probably still enjoy it, just like with Spore. Spore had a lot more potential but I still had a lot of fun with it. Guarantee No Man's Sky will be the same. However, I'm not sure I ant to buy it for $60....
