Artists' Corner

Postby Gigaverse » Sat Jul 16, 2016 10:25 am

Note: "Artists" in this case can be very inclusive - this thread welcomes all types of artists; especially the kind that draw, make music and create plays/literature.

There are a lot of NSers; and surely not a small number in there also happen to be interested in the arts in some way. Some of us are only mildly so; some are in it as a hobby; and some are already spending time tearing their hair out to find new ideas for professional masterpieces that would help feed themselves. What we can agree upon though: The Arts is very meaningful to us all.

I found myself surprised that there isn't a thread like this to cater not only to artists showcasing their art, but also those looking to be in touch with other artists as well - regardless of type; prospective musicians, artists on the drawing board, writers and playwrights-to-be... So I'm addressing that issue by creating this "Artists' Corner", also for those who don't usually go on any site other than this one. Come join, show us your artistic skills - regardless of tools or methods, lay bare your feelings about the arts, help one another out, and find out the experiences of other artists - be them professionals or hobbyists.

And always remember, there's an artist inside you or me somewhere.

Kidding, of course. But I guess artists and musicians can encounter some of the same problems too; they are both in it for the arts after all.

I just started making a collection of my artworks since the 20th of June.

Nothing much, and they're all pretty much at amateur/sketchy levels. I'm sure NS has more talents to offer than this. :p

One I still find to be generic.

I want it to be more defined and well-pronounced.

You have an eye for flow and angle, Gigaverse. Perspective is key. The gate and bamboo is a prime example of that. Nicely done. Have you given any thought to a program to help you render your work? There are wonderful things out there for artists. This an example. It allows you to clean up lines, make adjustments to what you've drawn, and drop in shading to give a 3D pop to your work... just to start! It's capable of much more, however. And then there's Creative Cloud. Holy shit, I LOVE this program. The full Adobe-goodies package is a bit hefty but worth it.

There's also programs like Painter. It's another expensive program but many artist friends swear by it.

I honestly have not used anything but Adobe products and Paint, but I'm sure there are people here who are familiar with all the program options out there. Asigna Giga, maybe you could start a link list in your OP?

For the curious, many of the banners and headings you see in my RP or nation stuff is done in PS by me or the husfiend, Cerillium. Artwork examples...

Cer's nation coreworld
Image

He generated the planet in Fractal Terrain 3, but the starfield, shading, atmosphere, text and so on are all his work. Because the planet was on file, compiling was a snap. Perhaps a half hour to put it together.

The P2TM Welcome Guide banner is also completely done via Photoshop. From start to finish, this took about 10 minutes (and it shows; very sloppy work).
Image

Another example of banner work, this for my other Swith nation.
Image

The program allowed me to combine various elements and patterns in order to incorporate my national flag into the background. I'll admit, this was a bitch to make because I was still very unfamiliar with the program. Took a few hours of figuring options out.

Some emblem and more banner work. Very basic, none of it taking more than an hour.

Thank you. You're too kind. Calling me Giga is fine by the way.
Swith Witherward wrote:Have you given any thought to a program to help you render your work?

I currently am using both Photoshop and a more obscure tool usually reserved for those manganime artists (Paint Tool SAI). They both are kinda similar and take some getting-used-to, IMO; but I hardly ever had the need for rendering. :lol2:

Well, not until someone tells me I really need to render will I do it. I've only gotten into digital art (excluding MS Paint) for less than a month, so there are some concepts I'm still not familiar with. I can still hold the pen though!

(Drawing with mouse is fine too, but it's bigger and more awkward/less comfortable to hold.)

Do you happen to also use Paint.NET though? I've heard good things about it.
Swith Witherward wrote:Asigna, maybe you could start a link list in your OP?

He's powerless. :p

I'm considering it. There's a thread currently stickied by the mods at the top of Arts & Fiction, but the OP CTE'd. I guess this thread can also serve that thread's purpose too.

I take art class for a few hours every Friday. I've been doing so for a few years now.

Haven't drawn any manga of the sort, but it looks cool.

Hiya fellow artists! I've had a strong interest in art for a long time and love working in all medias: coloured pencils, charcoals, oil pastels, ink, watercolours, oil paints and clay. My experience with digital art is pretty minimal as I haven't invested in any supplies or applications, but I'd love to get more involved in it - though I have done some work in Photoshop and Adobe Illustrater, and found it fun, but challenging.

Right now I'm working on becoming better at drawing/painting realistically, experimenting with my comic/cartoon style, and getting better at digital drawing. Besides that, I love to design logos and fonts!

When I get around to it, I'll probably upload some art, both old and new.

Actually, I had someone design the eagle based on a template I found and re-imagined for insertion onto the Japanese naval flag. All I did was a little recoloring. :lol2:
