Attempt at World History

Postby Northern-Armeania » Sat Jul 09, 2016 10:05 am

I recently published a book, God(s), Empire and Shifting Trade Routes, which attempts to details the whole history of the world in 184 pages of main text. A long time ago I posted on these forums about this. I found that their is a serious lack of concise overviews of human history that are not completely Euro-American Centric. Also general readers don't have time for massive college textbooks(which amaze me in their abilities to include less interesting details than I did). I focused on three main themes: Power(Empires, Rulers, Nation States, Wars etc.), Religion/Culture(I find that people today forget that in most pre modern societies, with exemptions like Confucian China and the Roman Empires, Religion was the prime force driving a society, just think about how most the great monuments[Borobudur, Angkor Wat, Mayan Pyramids, the Parthenon, Gothic Cathedrals and Ethiopian stone churches] were religious in nature) and economics (Agricultural and Industrial Revolutions, Colombian Exchange, Globalization, trade among World Regions etc.). So what does everyone think, what would be your three themes?

Tangentially related, it really annoys me to no end when people say things like "Columbus didn't discover America! The Native Americans were there first!!!". Europeans came across lands that they previously had no knowledge of, mapped them, and brought the information back to their homeland. That is discovery. Doesn't matter if other people had discovered it before them.

I watched some of that on TV and I didn't read the companion book. I thought it was a good attempt yet still ignored some essential information.

The first Europeans to land in the Americas were not Spaniards or Italians, they were Norse.

True, also Ethiopians were visiting Europe as early as 1306, long before Europeans were visiting them. They spoke so highly of their Christian Kingdom, Europeans were inspired to explore for themselves. Along the way the Europeans wanted to buy gold, so they bought slaves from one part of the African coast and sold them for gold elsewhere in Africa for gold, however after Columbus sailed the ocean blue and sugar plantations began it became more economical to export slaves to the Americas to harvest sugar. Later Europeans would start selling guns for slaves, which created a vicious cycle in which Gun(s) were used to acquire more slaves which were in turn used to acquire more guns, labeled by historians the Gun and Slave Cycle. Page 89-91 in my book.

True but it did not really leave a large impact on the world, whereas Columbus lead to the Columbian Exchange and the conquest of the Americas which in turn lead to beginning of the age of European imperialism that has drastically altered the entire globe. I would honestly say that Columbus might be the biggest turning point World History.

I have not yet read your book, having not heard of it until now, but I do intend to do so soon. Therefore, I can only offer a general comment based on your themes, which are quite reasonable. I do think, and I may find that I am mistaken when I read your work, that you may have left out a very important issue, geography. I refer you to an excellent work on its influence, "Guns, Germs, and Steel" if you have not read it.

PS I have recently concluded an unsuccessful search by title for your book, where is it available?

CYNIC, n. A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be. Hence the custom among the Scythians of plucking out a cynic's eyes to improve his vision.

For anyone else who can find my book you can buy it here https://www.createspace.com/4844375 or search for it on Amazon, I have read Guns, Germs and Steel and used it to write my book, however I personally refer Marvin Harris's Cannibals and Kings for the impact of environment on human cultures.
