Conlang Discussion

Postby Nordengrund » Wed Jul 06, 2016 8:10 pm

This is just a thread to draw in all conlangers on NS.

A conlang is short for "constructed language." A conlang is a language created by a person or a group of people for various reasons. Such reasons could be a language designed to be spoken as a world language, called an auxlang ("auxillary language), as a language for a fiction culture or race, as a form of secret communication, or for no other reason than for entertainment.

One of the most famous conlangers is Tolkien, the creator of Elvish. Some of the other most well-known conlangs include Esperanto, Klingon, and Dothraki.

The purpose of this thread is to discuss conlanging, share our creations, and answer questions about the activity.

Currently, I am working on two conlangs. One is a heavily agglutinating language designed to be what the ideal language would look and sound like to me. The other one an analytic/isolating language, mainly as an experiment with analytic languages and see if I could make something that stood out from other analytic languages. It also forces you to rethink grammar when a great many conlangs seem to be inflecting in some way.

So what about you?

The Yocatullic language is a Malayo-Polynesian language in the Tahitic group. It's closest relative is Maori. It is made distinct not only by a few sound changes, but also by apparent Quechua influence and possible Mesoamerican loan words, although the loans are scarcely used and the Quechua influence extends only so far as to add a proper plural form to the language. The name Ik' Ka' Ek' Akai blends K'iche elements with the native Polynesian, and may have originated from foreigners and been adopted.

It is believed that the language developed the way it did due to the Incan expedition into the Pacific, which supposedly occurred C. 1470. Although little physical evidence remains outside of the Yocatullic islands, genetic studies on Rapa Nui, and a few other island groups, have demonstrated probable contact with the Inca. Likewise, certain Roman artifacts found in Mexico also demonstrate a possible long-range trade chain making Mesoamerican and South American contact with Polynesians a distinct possibility.

I am developing a conlang that is the official language of Ghovatstan.

Here are the WIP grammar book and a dictionary that so far has only the names of numbers, days and months.

What i'm going to add are the noun declinations into three genders (male, female, neutral), and the formations of verbs. Ghovatstani is an agglutinative language like Finnish or Japanese.

In this spoiler are some brands and famous logos translated into Ghovatstani.

Tell me what do you think so far, and any tips.
