Hmmm , thats not a bad idea.
New haven america wrote:I figured out how we can have a good AU Gundam series again (Because IBO has failed), simply have the the title be either just numbers or letters. Think about what the 3 good AU series have in common (Not counting Turn A because spoilers), (G) Gundam, Gundam (X), Gundam (OO), just numbers or singular letters.

So if an AU series has singular letters or just numbers, then there's a higher chance it will be enjoyable *Nod*

Mobile Suit Gundam
After War Gundam X
Gundam 00

And Gundam X inspired Gundam Age (lost powerfull technology) , and Gundam orphans (Lost powerfull technology) , and arguably reconquesta in G (lost powerfull technology)

1. Clearer on your point, please.
2. And Gundam AGE and IBO aren't good. Inspiration/potential means nothing if you don't utilize it (Also, IBO's main inspiration was Aldnoah.Zero, so ya...)
3. Mobile Suit Gundam and Reconguista in G aren't AU, they're UC...

Am I the only one annoyed by the overabundance of Seed and Seed Destiny models/designs? They're not even that good, hell, Seed Astray and Seed Stargazer have better designs (And are better than S and SD) but are only side stories. So why do people like S+SD's MS designs so much?

Some of them probably touch on a thread of nostalgia for UC timeline's mass-production mecha; while the more outlandish of the Gundam designs no doubt tickle the fancy of those who first got into it via Wing. I mean, Destiny wasn't even SUBTLE about cashing in on UC nostalgia what with the Zaku and Gouf designs. At least Seed's Ginns and stuff are slightly more subtle about it and only having slightly One Year War era Zeon-esque design motifs. Which makes sense when you look at Seed as a modernized reboot of several concepts from the original anime. The whole Alliance vs Zaft conflict and themes of "neither side is right" and "war really, really REALLY sucks" were present in the original, especially in Tomino's novelization, so thematically it works that Zaft's mass-production designs have the Zeon-esque mono-eyes and general aesthetic.

If it makes you feel better though, I'm pretty sure there are fucktons more UC timeline mecha designs, variations, and so on than there are from Seed and Destiny. :P I mean, there are roughly a bajillion different Zaku II variants and field modifications, and nearly as many for pretty much any other mainline Zeon units. But then UC timeline does have something like a 30 year headstart on accumulating such designs.

But what about the people who got into Gundam through Seed and SD? What do they get out of the MS designs? I don't really mind the Zaku's and the Gouf's (Well, I kinda do, they're more blatent rip-offs than anything... I know every enemy needs to have mono-eye type suits, but they couldn't be more original?), but the Gundams from Seed and SD are honestly kinda meh at best.

But the UC has this... style and sense of regality and/or oddness that Seed/SD lack. I guess I let that slide because UC suits can be so cool/interesting/odd/wtf and still pull it off, like some amphibious Zeon suits(Like the Juagg/Juaggu(Forgot how it's pronounced)), they can be so derpy yet so unique and interesting, and yet they can fight alongside other, cooler Zeon suits and look like they belong there. I think Seed/SD suits are very bland and samey (Especially with the Gundam lines), especially when compared to the other AU's (And the CE's own side-stories. The Astray frames are cool, and Strike Noir and the Stargazer are beautiful).

Gonna guess in those cases it comes down to exposure. More people will have seen Seed and/or Destiny than have read or seen the various Astray and Stargazer mangas/OAVs/etc. Especially since it was shortly after Destiny that things got wonky between the Japanese and American licenses. Some of the spinoffs have been notoriously difficult to get in the West as a result, so at least out here there's less interest in those kits.

I've always been fond of the UC timeline stuff, even some of Zeon's wonkier One Year War period mobile armors. And for all that it is cheesy as fuck, I also have a soft spot for G Gundam's at times completely batshit mecha designs.

Well, of course. But when I can't really tell the difference between the Freedom and the Destiny, there's a bit of a problem there... (Also, even Astray and Stargazer have more distinctive designs).

There's only... 3 design types I don't really like/find interesting: Wing, Seed/SD, and IBO's Gundams (Oh hey, more of me complaining about IBO). Rest of the designs I like and can find something interesting about the MS's and MA's. (Favorites however are UC, 00, and IBO's Grazes)

And with Iron Blooded Orphans finally over (Even though I haven't seen the last ep.), am I the only one that thought the series was crap?

IBO's getting a second season and a side story manga.

Yet Sunrise still refuses to animate Hathaway's Flash and Crossbone...
