It's a Trap! (The MovieTalk Megathread)

Postby Killdash » Tue Feb 09, 2016 3:57 am

In my dalliances through the NationStates boards, I've yet to come across any thread devoted to the love of films and and the art or movie making. So it falls to me to create the very first Movie Talk Megathread, a dedicated hub for all NS based movie fans and aspiring critics- whatever you are, as long as you love movies.

So, if you want to debate the merits of Shamalyans unique approach, gossip about the latest industry news, hold forth on fan theories that eat away at your precious childhood, or just talk amongst your fellow moviegoers about exactly how bad (or good!) the latest Bond is, then this is the place for you.

So join us, where the popcorn is always tasty, (and ridiculously overpriced) the drinks all taste the same, and there's always melted chocolate on your seat. Ladies and Gentleman, Killdash presents:

THE MOVIE THREAD

1. All the general NS rules apply, naturally.

2. Threadjacking is not cool. The tread is for movies, and things that have to do with, and only with, movies. Talking about the Daredevil series as context to the Marvel Universe, swell. Debating whether Game of Thrones or Orange is the Black contains more nude scenes? Not swell. Move to another thread.

3. Follow our general rule of Don't be a Cock. We understand that you think Star Trek is 150 million times better than Star Wars, but don't let's be abrasive about it. A little joshing, a little heat in the arguement, fine, but don't be doing anything real stupid, kapeesh?

4. No explosions. Under any circumstances. We don't want to attract any Micheal Bays that may be flirting around.

With that out the way, it's over to you guys. Stay frosty.

How do you take your tea?: Seriously, very seriously.
Who the hell do you think you are?: I see myself as a mix of Don Quixote, Stephen Fry and 12 year old boy mixed into one very strange mind.
Are you always so modest?: Yes, though it takes a man of some character to pull it off.
Hey, your insensitive remark/insult/racial slur has me in a tizzy: Well, if you wish to cyber insult me, then do your worst.

I have a VHS copy of Nemo, a scratched disk of Saving Private Ryan and another unmarked tape. Probably a old video I made. Which one should we watch?

While the tape option is tempting, lets go Finding Nemo.

I'm a sucker for classics.

And you know, Finding Dory is coming out. That could go two ways, awesome nostalgia trip, or a lifetime of memories carelessly discarded in the name of profit.

I hope the former, I fear the latter.

Well, I'm going to see Deadpool tomorrow, heard lots of good stuff so eager to see it.

Also, let's see if we can't jumpstart a bit more activity on this thread: what are people's favourite genres and individual films? Anyone have a film that's made a lasting impression on them?

I'm a big Sci Fi fan. If I were to name movies with a lasting influence on me, I'd definitely say Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, and actually quite shockingly, Watchmen.

I really loved the themes in Watchmen.

I'm also a big fan of sci-fi, but unfortuately there's so many crappy ones out there, it can sometimtes be hard to find good ones. I love both War Of The Worlds films (and the novel is my favourite book), and I really love the aesthetics of the Alien films (including Prometheus, but not Resurrection; I pretend that one didn't happen).
I suppose Star Wars has probably left the biggest impact on me (The Pantom Menace was one of the first films I can actually remember watching as a young child believe it or not). Having said that, there are plenty of ways that films can impact a person, and the film that's burned into my brain in a way that I'll never be able to unsee is Threads, a BBC film from 1984 about what would happen if a strategic nuclear exchange occurred between NATO and Warsaw Pact countries. It was based on the most accurate and recent science and is generally regarded as the most accurate and realistic portrayal of nuclear war and its aftermath ever made. There are images I will never be able to get out of my head.

On a lighter note, I'm a fan of the Bond franchise (the films, not the books - James Bond may be a sexist arrogant arsehole in the films, but in the books he's a truly loathsome character, I read Casino Royale and whilst I appreciated the lesson in Baccarat Chemin-de-fer, I didn't have a particularly urgent desire to read any more of the books). My favourites are the ones with the charismatic villains, the plots that are ambitious but mildly plausible, and the truly terrible puns (which in my opinion were the saving grace of Roger Moore's tenure).

Wow, this post is way longer than I expected...

The preview I saw had Wonder Woman come into the mix eventually, which got me interested.

I play DCUO, which is a game. It's kinda close to the comics. But it got me a little more interested in the DC universe, which I am more interested in Batman vs. Superman than the Marvel Civil War movie.

I actually don't really consider myself a superhero fan. I just like a lot of the newer movies (I really don't like the older ones). I do love the X-Men series though, and I heard about Deadpool (the character) through tumblr osmosis. I'm not a fan of the DC heroes tbh, I don't get the fuss over Batman. To be fair, I'm not a comics person, and I honestly don't think I'll ever read them (I'm not THAT into it), so I haven't based any of my opinions on anything other than the films. I am interested in seeing the Wonder Woman movie when it comes out though, I've heard she has a really interesting backstory (speaking of, a Black Widow origin film would also be great, I'd love to find out more about her).

On the subject of upcoming superhero movies, I wonder if they'll incorporate Iceman's new sexuality into the films? I know the actor said he'd be up for it.

Well they brought her in so as to start laying the foundation for the Justice League films. I don't really think Ben Affleck is the best casting as Batman, but I am willing to give him a shot.
