Joined the team that won last time, and we're now being dominated in the same spawn point (RU spawn), despite still having the two dominating players.

I remember that a lot of maps had disadvantageous spawns for only one side.

Finally gave up and started shotgunning again. Got kicked again.

Since I'm 90% sure I've now played on the side with the admin, who has now faced being spawnraped at least once, and still they're bothering to enforce this.
Which strikes me as astoundingly petty.

Speaking of servers, the servers for Demon's Souls have shut down. A piece of gaming history has now been lost forever, like the petals of a flower scattered to the wind.

This is what happens when players don't control the servers for a game.

Too bad that Battlefield 3 didn't have the ballistic knife from Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. You could creatively bent the rules that way.

Will players ever be able to without literally setting up and supporting their own game server farms (if it were even legal for them to do so) though?

Many older games allow dedicated servers. That's why stuff like Battlefield 1942 even exist anymore.

I don't understand the question.

In any game that allows player-run servers alongside the dedicated servers provided by the developers, players have to set up and support their own physical servers if they want their own servers to play on. That doesn't mean that they purchase actual server hardware like in a company, as they can run them off a standard computer. If one looks at the "Tools" section of Steam, then there are a lot of pieces of software that the player can download and run a server for a particular game. It's perfectly legal for them to do so even after the developers have shutdown their dedicated servers.

I don't understand game servers.

So far as I understood it, game publishers own server farms that are then used to run games. After so many years of support, publishers pull this support and the servers, and the online aspects of these games, die. This hits console games particularly hard.

The only server system I have any experience with if the BF3/4 server system where one can "rent" dedicated server space from the EA servers. One assumes that whenever BF3/4 lose support, that server space will die.

Did the ESA not argue that it's illegal to run abandonware servers?

Rented servers for BF3/4 aren't physically on EA's servers, though, so when EA shuts down their own servers everything else will stay up.
Of course, EA could very easily shut down the actual Battlelog server which would nuke the game.

Alrighty, let me explain it for you.

Multiplayer console games run on the centralized servers of their respective online systems like Xbox Live or the publisher's own server farms. Publishers have the final say of how long these servers run, how many there are, and who plays on them. There's certainly exceptions such as being able to rent server space from EA, but that's still at the discretion of EA to continue that service since they ultimately maintain control of the servers.

On PC, it's a bit more complicated. Some games have dedicated servers that the publisher maintains like Ubisoft does with Rainbow Six Siege or like EA does with Star Wars: Battlefront orTitanfall. Once those servers go, so does the game. However, there are plenty of games that also offer the option of players setting up their own servers at home (in addition to the servers that the developer/publisher provides) using their own computers or dedicated server hardware, at no charge paid to the developer (barring the costs of hydro and internet service, of course). This is in games like Battlefield (on PC we don't have to rent server space from EA, we can set up our own), Chivalry: Medieval Warfare, Tribes: Ascend, Unreal Tournament, TOXIKK, War of the Roses, and so forth. This ensures that players can still play the multiplayer portions of games long after the developers shut down their own dedicated servers.

So if players can create servers at no cost or tangible issue to the publisher, why do so many recent high-profile games, particularly online-only titles, not permit this?

Apart from "they're being ridiculous", because that much is obvious.
Like I posted above, the ESA supposedly argued (so sayeth Jim Sterling) that abandonware servers for dead, impossible-to-acquire games would violate copyright.
