It's been almost 48 hours since I listened to any Metal; it was such a traumatising experience for me!

Not that I expect anyone to care, but I just thought I should tell you that I am going to be less active in this thread for a while, due to the fact that the only computer at home is my Mum's, which I will have to share with my brother (he uses it a fair bit, so it's kind of hard to get a go). I will still try to pop in every so often just to say a few words and as per usual I will check the thread to stay up to date.

-----

On another note; what's people's opinions on the band Saor (also previously known as Àrsaidh)? I have been giving them a listen to of late and I must say that I have really been digging them, especially the album Roots, which is now one of my all time favourites. Personally I find the music to be pretty damn epic (certainly aided by the atmosphere) and on top of that the songs are very enjoyable/engaging throughout, especially when taking into consideration their length that usually spans 10+ minutes.

Weak band. Their album Aura was boring and dull and "atmospheric" aspects didn't really help the case.

Agreed. Roots was a decent album but Aura was simply forgettable. Proves once again that atmospheric black metal is as likely to contain good quality as deathcore, i.e. very rarely.

Aura is more like an exception in atmospheric black metal, I happen to enjoy the genre a lot. Aura was more like atmospheric metal, not black enough.

Thrash metal that hasn't forgotten its crust punk roots tends to be pretty goddamn intense as well.

Exactly.

"Thrash is extreme" and "Thrash is not extreme" are generalizing and inaccurate comments. It's case by case whether or not thrash is extreme.

Thus far thrash metal anthems haven't replaced things such as AC/DC and ZZ Top on classic rock radio channels, so it appears that thrash is still considered to be too loud for the crowd.

This is true. Not all thrash metal is created equal, but generally speaking thrash metal is not extreme metal. It certainly can be, but as a general rule it is not. As you said, thrash is borderline extreme so that spices things up a bit. But death and black metal are without a doubt extreme metal. The extreme label helps to distinguish the mostly brutal music from the sometimes brutal (as a whole). If someone says extreme metal I'm thinking death and black, but I'm also considering that they might, for example if they like Death, like Kreator.
