I think Mechanix is just a better executed song. The musicianship of Dave Squared and the Jazz Squad is simply superior to three angsty teenagers and Cliff Burton.

The production and bass work was better too. It took them 3 songs into the second album to figure out how to use cliff.

It's the enthusiasm with mechanix. It has more meaning to Dave Squared (keeping this btw) than the four horsemen does to metallica. It captures the hardcore influences and spirit with the big "FUCK YEAH!" at the end. It's the pissed off drug fueled anger that gives the song its strength as opposed to boozing the tempo down. In an ideal world the majority of metallica's songs sound like Fight Fire

Title track is my favorite too. Can't really namedrop other favorites since I don't listen to Death all that much.

So a song about banging at a gas station has more meaning to Dave...alright. Anyway the "hardcore influences" are another reason I don't care too much for the song. Out of all the "core" subgenres hardcore is my least favorite. And yes, that means deathcore is my favorite. Enough of this. Moving on.

Hardcore isn't a "core" subgenre, it is THE "core" subgenre. The original, from which all others developed. Even non-"core" subgenres originated from hardcore or were directly influenced by it; all extreme metal subgenres except doom metal are directly influenced by hardcore. ...so hardcore influences are unavoidable if you listen to metal long enough.

I'm not going to make the elitist "deathcore isn't metal" argument, but I've really stopped listening to deathcore bands altogether. Everything notable about deathcore can be done better by metalcore (breakdowns; see: Earth Crisis and other NYHC), death metal (br00tal sound) or grindcore (unintelligible vocals) bands.

The actual lyrics aren't where the meaning of the song lies, the meaning is in the underlying aggression that captures the bitterness between Dave and Metallica at the time. That being said, I 100% prefer The Four Horsemen to Mechanix.

In my defense original doesn't always mean better. I'm not a big fan of "classic" heavy metal with the exceptions of Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden. I'm not a big fan of "old school" death metal. I like bands that are INFLUENCED by these styles though. Same goes for metalcore and deathcore (though I would argue that the breakdowns in the latter are the only "core" element, the rest is influenced by various forms of death metal). I ain't denying the significance of hardcore to metal, that can't be denied no matter what.
