I like progressive metal, so I probably will like them.

My favorite Dream Theater album is Black Clouds & Silver Linings. My favorite songs are A Nightmare to Remember, The Count of Tuscany (both on BC&SL), The Glass Prison and Six Degreesof Inner Turbulence (both on Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence).

The only DT album in my collection so far is Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, 6DOIT for short.

They're not for everybody. But I consider them...one of my all time favorite bands. As in they have exactly TWO bad albums, the same amount in my book as Iron Maiden.

And without further ado...THE DREAM THEATER DISCOGRAPHY RATINGS!
Images and Words: 9.8/10
Metropolis Pt. 2: 10/10 ONE OF THE GREATEST ALBUMS OF ALL TIME

I find it funny that these two albums are among my favourites (rated them 9.5/10 and 10/10 respectively), but despite this I haven't even been bothered to check out the rest of their discography. I guess I will have to get around to it soon, because judging off some of your ratings, it looks as though I have been missing out on some other goodies.

So, I really like the idea of sludge metal (basically, a metal version of grunge, for those not in the know), but in practice, I find I'm not a big fan of its most common execution. A bit too heavy on the distortion. Like, I was expecting something like a heavier version of Alice in Chains, or maybe even Soundgarden, but all I can find seems to be more like somebody remixed a garbage disposal.

Meanwhile, I've recently taken an unexpected liking to power metal.

Thanks.

Why would I take offense to it?

Also, surprisingly, "remixed garbage disposal" doesn't turn up anything on Youtube.

Sludge is more what happens when heavy hardcore goes doom metal. Eyehategod, the first sludge band that I got familiar with, is even rather Hellhammer-esque in certain respects on their debut album In The Name Of Suffering. I do understand the link Grenartia sees between sludge and grunge, though. Nirvana was more than a little influenced by the plodding sludgy doom of the mighty Melvins, while Alice In Chains excelled at making soulful doomladen junkie blues once they stopped doing cock rock.

Then maybe you'll like the earlier albums of Mastodon, another one of my personal favorites.
Lars Ulrich: Hello, Dave. Look at your band. Now back to mine. Now back at your band. Now back to mine. Sadly, your band isn't mine, but if they stopped playing pure thrash metal and switched to a tough guy version of Motley Crue, they could sell like they're Metallica! Look down, back up, where are you? You're on the high road, taking it higher like a super collider. That album was great. What's in your hand, back at me. I have it, it's a hard drive with all the private information of the users we banned from Napster. Look again, the hard drive is now Babymetal. Anything is possible when your band reeks of pop. I'm wearing a thong.

Varg Vikernes can fuck off.
