Try Woods of Ypres, their fourth album is a good place to start.

Where was your star?
Was it far, was it far?
When did we leave?
We believed, we believed, we believed

In the heat and the rain
With whips and chains
Just to see him fly
Too many died
We build a tower of stone
With our flesh and bone
To see him fly
But we don't know why
Ooh, now where do we go

Crypt Sermon is some good modern retro-doom inspired by Candlemass. There's also Solstice.

If you can enjoy the more gothic style, influenced by death/doom, I also second Draconian and Isole. My Dying Bride, Saturnus and early Katatonia are masters of that sound as well.

Speaking about black metal (the last page or so), I've been meaning to try and listen to it for a while. What should I start off with?

One of the greatest albums of all time. As great as old Celtic Frost is Monotheist beats it all.

There are many things you can go wrong with. This is not one of them.

No, HH and CF aren't good for getting into Black Metal. Immortal however is the best and Bathory is a second best.

Haven't really explored funeral doom, and death/doom depends in the band.

Good funeral doom to check out: Ahab, Thergothon, Esoteric, and Skepticism

Good death/doom to check out: My Dying Bride, early (and newest) Paradise Lost, early Amorphis, early Katatonia, Swallow the Sun, Autopsy (if you like more of an old school death metal sound), Daylight Dies, Evoken, and Morgion
