Too poppy sounding and seems kinda out of place. Not a bad singer, but just doesn't fit perfectly with most Dream Theater songs.

He fits as well as Bruce Dickinson fits in Iron Maiden. And at the core of it they aren't THAT different.
Lars Ulrich: Hello, Dave. Look at your band. Now back to mine. Now back at your band. Now back to mine. Sadly, your band isn't mine, but if they stopped playing pure thrash metal and switched to a tough guy version of Motley Crue, they could sell like they're Metallica! Look down, back up, where are you? You're on the high road, taking it higher like a super collider. That album was great. What's in your hand, back at me. I have it, it's a hard drive with all the private information of the users we banned from Napster. Look again, the hard drive is now Babymetal. Anything is possible when your band reeks of pop. "Why do you have to be so high-and-mighty? I was just curious that you had to pick the standard argument against Dream Theater that has rather poor backing."
"Do you like ANY high, melodic clean singing?"

Cosumar have you figured out the "Seek and Destroy" feature on Rock Science yet? If you don't know what that is press the guitar pick while looking for a match. I have no idea what it is.

Just ordered the "soundtrack of winter". Which means Melancholie² by ColdWorld and At the Heart of Winter and All Shall Fall by Immortal.

Not sure what I think about it yet. The lyrics remind me a bit of Gojira on The Way of All Flesh and the Precambrian-era of the Ocean, but with a lot of "human beings are evil" rhetoric. At parts, the drums sound like they were programmed on a drum machine, and the onslaught of tremolo picking and 32nd notes leaves very little room for the album to breathe. At the same time, it's put together in such a way that it all sounds "right." So....yeah.

I haven't listened to it so I can't say anything about that album.

Melancholie^2 is a great album, but I haven't heard either of those Immortal albums.

I think my soundtrack for winter would probably be something like:
-Dance of December Souls, Brave Murder Day and The Great Cold Distance by Katatonia
-Songs to Leave and Springtime Depression by Forgotten Tomb
-My Arms, Your Hearse by Opeth
-Filosofem by Burzum

And then some albums that couldn't be considered metal by any stretch.

From what Dream Theater I've heard, Metropolis, Pt. 2 is the only one I can really say I like. They have some other songs elsewhere I like, but no full albums.

As for the breathing room comment, I think that's what all the atmospheric "clean" vocal sections accomplish. They give us something to latch onto as a contrasting respite between the brutal bits.

IMO Battles is their second worst. Ahead of only Damned in Black because DiB just sounds too generic by Immortal standards, and seemed like a filler between Winter and Sons.

Meh, All Shall Fall and Blizzard Beasts are my two least-favorites. For some reason, Immortal's first three albums just really appeal to me the most.

I have now realized that The Great Cold Distance is a perfect album. Used to find it boring, but I guess I never listened to it in the right mindset.

It's not my favorite by them musically (5 or 6 of the songs don't really stand out to me, but overall it's still pretty good in that regard), but lyrically it's probably my favorite Katatonia album. In the White and Journey Through Pressure are highlights. Have you heard their other albums?
