I don't think it takes knowledge of musical theory to realize that shoegaze doesn't really sound like Metallica.

You don't have to give an album a decent rating just because it's considered a classic. Let the rating reflect your true listening experience. Though I would hate to see Jester Race rated anything lower than 3.5...

Brb, I'll listen to it.

Pretty sure I know more and I never learned music theory.

And that's why he's in a shoegaze band and not progressive rock :lol2:

Off the top of my head the only release I'm looking forward to this year/early next year is Procession's new album.

That specific type of music lover is quite generic, actually. They pretend to have a broad taste, but they really do not. Everything that is outside their modestly sized comfort zone tends to become subject to criticism, because they honestly think you can fake insight by being negative about things.

In all fairness he came to the conclusion not after listening to an entire song (and let's be honest, Alcest has evolved a fair bit though the new album looks like a mix of their first two), but after listening for FIFTEEN SECONDS.

The new Sodom album is great. Tied with Vektor but the only reason why I placed it under Vektor on my top 10 list is because I know Sodom can do better.

Did you notice any Melechesh in there? For some reason I could hear production similar to Melechesh and some eastern riffs that would befit a thrashy Melechesh.

You accidentally mentioned Absu without actually mentioning Absu.

Absu is actually Absu which is surprisingly thrashy as fuck.

The first four songs of the new Sodom are really good but after that it doesn't hold my attention for long. The guitar sound is a bit too brickwalled and dissonant-sounding, makes it a bit hard to make out each riff because I know they're in there. The actual song structures are kind of cool too, more tempo changes and dynamics than I'm used to from Sodom but it's still not that original. Decent album but I wish it was shorter and had more standout tracks and a better production.

Bands such as Absu are vastly superior when compared to the overwhelming majority of all those retrothrash acts. Great band to see live on stage as well.

Absu is pretty good, I must say. And totally agree with you, at least what they're doing is a little bit new compared to "hey let's try to sound exactly like Bonded By Blood!"

This is why Toxic Holocaust tends to be so much better than the competition as well, because that band understands that you can actually create something original while also clearly getting your inspiration from brutal thrash, eighties black metal and crust punk.

Hard to say since I haven't listened to Melechesh. I noticed the riff of Motörhead's In the Black in Rolling Thunder though.

New Sodom is decent if you're into that. Inquisition and Solution .45 both released albums yesterday. Honestly this past week has been a bit slow at least for me. We got new Devy in a week though so that's cool.

There's been a lot of talk about the most recent album of In Flames, they finally toned those irritating Gothenburg death metal elements down in order to create a more marketable sound.

Listened to Defeated Sanity's album Disposal Of The Dead/Dharmata, which consists of two EPs, the more brutal Disposal and the more technical Dharmata. I preferred the brutal part of it. The technical part sounded more like "look we're so technical!!" rather than actually good technical.

Disposal of the Dead: 4.5/5
Dharmata: 2.5/5
Overall: 3.5/5
