As for your '10 to 9' question, easily. Ten was funnier, happier, more vibrant... and yet then there was the dark side, especially towards the end, and it's that contrast I love, that contrast that was brought even further with Eleven.

As for Twelve... I don't have anything against him, specifically. He just doesn't seem quite as... human, if you will... as Ten or Eleven. They had complicated personalities, like we do. Twelve... well, he's gotten better over his tenure, but when I can use one word to sum up a character that should be as multifaceted as the Doctor... that's a problem, to me.

Also, I'm not a fan of Clara, and she really pulled him down for me. Now that she's out of the picture, will he have a chance to really shine? I hope so.

Bolded is actually the reason I prefer 12. Primarily because the doctor is not human. He's a batshit insane millennia old Time Lord who has seen and done unimaginable things. 12 feels more like the Doctor then any of the previous revival doctors.

Also best Doctor is 7 and I will enact a complex, misleading and sinister scheme against any who disagree.

While this is true, he's also harder to relate to, at least for me... so it's harder to care.

They've had slave races literally since their second ever appearance, with the Robomen in The Dalek Invasion of Earth.

Need I mention the Pigmen from Daleks in Manhattan as well?

Probably not; Hell Bent was incredibly well received by all but a few people, as evidenced by reactions, ratings, reviews, and even the polls taken here. I didn't take numbers, but in the week after it aired here Hell Bent received mostly 4s and 5s, nearly on par with Heaven Sent.

Why are you trying to relate to a time travelling nigh immortal alien? Do you judge everything by how similar it is to you?
Isn't that what the point of there being companions is - to provide a character for normal people to relate to?

To me, they're supposed to be stand-ins for the audience, so they can ask the questions we can't.

Except I'm not asking the questions. I'm talking to myself at a weirdly frantic pace, trying to figure out what's going on(and annoying the heck out of people who are trying to keep up with what I'm saying). Unless I already know, in which case I tend to know it before the question even gets asked.

In other words, I'm trying to relate to a time-traveling, nigh-immortal alien because there's more to relate to in him than there is in his companions. They're too... normal. Too big-picture. Too neurotypical, to be perfectly honest with you. So they fail to provide a character for me to relate to.

Well. Except for the ones like Romana. Romana was awesome.

The Doctor, on the other hand, is so far ahead of everyone else... while being so far behind them, at the same time. He's still working through 'our' world, stumbling and fumbling around what, to his companions, is the norm, only at home in what seems strange and unfathomable to them. He lives in a world apart, and no matter how hard he tries to fit in, he never quite manages. What's strange to him is what's perfectly normal to them, and what's normal to him is what's strange to them. He's not one of them, and he never truly will be. His social interactions are rough at best, and disastrous at worst. He has a few close friends who can somewhat understand him, and a lot of people who probably never will. He doesn't belong in the world he so often finds himself returning to, and I think he realizes that--but because he loves it so much, he keeps trying to belong there anyway, gathering the 'normal' people to try and help him get the best out of both worlds.

That's why I relate to him. Because that feeling is something I understand.

New Christmas special soon. Edit: I've seen it and thought it was good.
lots of twists and turns, and not really that xmas focused. Interesting possible send-off for River. I wonder if she'll have an SJA-esque spinoff one day. I'd like that.

agreed, it really brought out her motives for him, kind of explains the rather flirty nature of her relationship with 11, at least from her perspective.

I liked it. River and The Doctor bouncing off each other was a laugh and the king was also funny. Though it may be because I'm tired, but despite being quite touching, the end felt liked it dragged a bit. A nice send off for River Song nonetheless.

I thought that was a very beautiful episode. I was a bit distracted by my boyfriend during it, but it was rather romantic towards the end.

I found that episode somewhat entertaining. I wouldn't say it's a classic, but it's just a bit of light-hearted fun at Christmas (probably one of Moffat's best specials, in my opinion.

Capaldi and Kingston seem to have good chemistry together. Better than Smith and Kingston, I think. Maybe it's just because they're closer in terms of age...

Greg Davies and Matt Lucas' performances were rather amusing as well.

Yo, it's Kouralia in case anyone remembers me from ages back.
Not too good. The SLeepy Monster one and UNIT one were appalling, and they just stuck in my mind. I completely forgot the Opener 2-Parter actually happened, the Ghost one was pretty good, Face The Raven was awesome and Heaven Sent/Hell Bent were pretty good, and The Girl WHo Died/Woman Who Lived were pretty good.

The problem is, my dislike of the Sleepy Monster one and the UNIT ones is so at the forefront of my mind that I largely forgot the others existed, imo they really bloody dropped the ball on those.

How the hell did that end up as one of the best episodes of the series? Xmas Episodes are meant to be trite, childish, overly-drive-home some mushy message and... well, rely more on shoving the face of someone well-known onto the TV than story. This one was actually really good:
  • Loved Gregg Davies as the king.
  • The dynamic of River Song and the Doctor was brilliant, especially pre-Doctor Reveal. I absolutely adored his ott 'it's bigger on the inside' thing.
  • Story was pretty good.
  • Good send-off for River Song.
My only real complaint was that Hydroflax/Husband/Servant-Dude was brought back at the end to go 'look, they're not dead!' which was pointless and added nothing. And the head-splitty aliens. Like, did that actually do anything? I can get adding new aliens in... But adding in an alien whose sole difference from a human is 'they use the bit where their brain should be as a pocket', and whose sole role is 'to take something out of the pocket-brain and give it to someone'? Why not just use a human there? Especially because the Doctor seems to be really bad at realising that EVERYONE SURROUNDING HIM is not the human they pretend to be (see that cyborg-Victorian one - incidentally, wasn't that the same restaurant set as from the body-harvesting restaurant?).

New poll up. Didn't include The End of Time: Part One because it's only half of a story and there's a ten-option limit on polls.

I certainly might, especially if I'd be able to get out in some fashion a few of the old unused ideas from my long-running Doctor Who roleplay.

Well, I'm going to put some notes down in a factbook, and then maybe some time tomorrow can TG it to you - if you're still interested after you've seen the probably-godawful-ideas-dwelling-in-my-fevered-brain then we can get talking on your ideas. ;)

I am also reminded how I set my second character in that RP to be an angry Scottish RSM. I was watching The Thick of It then, and the character Malcolm McDonald's name was a mash up of Jamie McDonald and Malcolm Tucker... Unfortunately I picked Jamie's picture, not Malcolm's, else it would've been hilarious if I'd had Peter Capaldi as the character base. :p

Never done one, but I'd definitely be interested in any kind of Doctor Who rp.

You can bounce ideas off me or anything if you want. I probably don't have any good ones but I'd like to see this kind of thing get off the ground.

Wow, you just have to criticize every single thing I say, don't you?

Yes. That's the one that makes me emotional. Because my brain is wired differently from yours. That's not an exaggeration, or a metaphor, it is a literal truth. My brain does not work in the same way yours does.

This is reality. Deal with it.
