I'm hoping for a female Doctor, to be honest. Given the emphasis Moffat's put on the idea, I think it'd be a bit of a snub if Chibnall didn't go with it.

They've made quite a few hints at it this season. Why bother making the references if they're not going to do it?

I used to be against the idea, but Michelle Gomez's portrayal of Missy/the Master has changed my mind. Providing it was a well-cast actress, I think it could work. Casting the right actress would be the stumbling block, though.

A trained parakeet would be better than Kris Marshall. I seriously don't think I could watch Doctor Who with him in the lead role.

I was very skeptical when Matt Smith was announced, but he had the benefit of being very unknown at the time, and he won me over on his first episode. Marshall has the downside of having starred in a few things, and everything I've seen him in points in the direction that he'd be terrible as The Doctor.

There are plenty of women who'd be perfect for the role. I'd much rather have the right woman than the wrong man. I think at this point, a bad casting call will harm the show.

Every actor since 2005 has been a risk. Tennant was too unknown and too handsome, Smith was too unknown and too young, Capaldi was too old, etc. Even the companions got some flack. Amy was too sexy, and remember all the "outrage" over Bill being gay? I noticed all of that disappeared once we got an episode or two with the characters, and I suspect the same will be true with a female Doctor, despite whatever outrage there'd be from the internet. Most fans and casual viewers probably wouldn't care.

I am not expect much change tomorrow, just to avoid disappointment: meanwhile, Twitter is awash with comments regarding Daily Mail readers being furious at the slightest hint that the next Doctor could be female.

I think the show is long overdue for a change, but I'm not expecting it either. My prediction will be a focus-group approved Tennant clone who will get the teenage girls back on the show after the "too old" Capaldi.

I am not implying it is either real or fake, since it looks minor to me, but there seems to be a background to that twitter post, as in many Daily Mail readers reacting angrily to anything that goes wrong.

Given the near-universal backlash against the idea of Kris Marshall as the Doctor, I'm wondering if the BBC have maybe planted that rumor on purpose so that, even if they put forward another generic white man, more progressive elements of the fandom will nonetheless still feel as if we've dodged a bullet.

I do think it's a distinct possibility that it's a bit of deliberate misdirection, but I'm not sure it's anything as Machiavellian as you suggest.

That's my greatest fear for the franchise. They'll go for a parody of Tennant rather than a new and unique Doctor as they all have been.

I want Tilda Swinton, as oft I've said in this thread. I doubt it though. I'm gearing up for a let down.

That's exactly why I fear they've picked someone like Marshall. Marshall would be a parody of The Doctor, but not The Doctor. Doctor Who is fundamentally a show about change, and rehashing something that's been done before goes against what Doctor Who is about.

Tilda Swinton is probably my second favorite choice. You just look at her and know she'd be amazing in the role.

I'd like it to be Colin Morgan, Eddie Marsan, or Nicola Walker. It won't be any of them, but it would be nice if it was.

Also, an afternoon on Twitter has led me to the conclusion that the more a person wants a female Doctor the worse their ideas about which actress it should be are.

Agreed re: Tilda Swinton.

Apparently the odds drastically changed last night and Kris Marshall was overtaken as the favourite by...
Jodie Whitaker best known for playing Beth Latimer in Broadchurch. Given the new show runner is from the Broadchurch production crew, I'd suspected (and said previously) that if he had any say over who the next Doctor is that he may well (or may not) have been inclined to bring someone on board whom he'd worked with previously. (Along this line, I actually thought Olivia Coleman might be a surprise choice.)

Of course it's just speculation and we'll know tonight but just thought it was an interesting development. It's rare the odds on favourite changes overnight for these things.

That's exactly why they should go for an androgynous Tilda Swinton. 8) Or even have her play a male Doctor... That could be different and interesting.

My main worry is tokenism. I don't want something done just for the sake of having done it. I'd like there to be a character-based reason. For example, the Doctor "choosing" that face (which he'd seen before) for Twelve to inspire/remind him to do XYZ. If the Doctor is a female, rather than just be female for the sake of having one, I want there to be a reason to be explored to further develop the character. (I wanted – and hope we still get this – for Missy/the Master.)

On a side note, whilst I still have a lingering suspicion I'll be disappointed tonight when we see Kris Marshall revealed, some twitter users have pointed out that the trailer for tonight's reveal may hint at the next Doctor being a female:

  • Showing 10 Downing Street – currently occupied by a female PM;
  • The particular stretch of cliffs they showed are known as the Seven Sisters of Dover;
  • The Statue of Liberty, a.k.a. Lady Liberty.
