All of the episodes in the last season, besides maybe the last episode, were very good and the quality was impressively consistent throughout, so picking a favourite wasn't easy. The two that I enjoyed the most were probably the Extremis and The Eaters of Light; I plumped for the latter in the poll which I'm glad about since it apparently didn't have any votes whilst Extremis seems to be getting the praise it rightfully deserves already. Extremis was a very clever and poignant episode, and possibly the best in the series, but Eaters appealed to my personal tastes more, with the historical setting and the fairy-tale feeling. The only thing that annoyed me about Eaters was the rather ahistorical portrayal of Roman attitudes to sexuality, which seemed to be driven by a desire to provide an acceptable 21st century socially liberal moral rather than reflect the complex reality of the time.

I'm not sure how ahistorical it was. I think the historicity of it was probably unintentional, but a lot of the research I'm doing at my university is about lower-class attitudes towards sexuality in ancient Rome and how they differed from the norms we're used to finding in elite literature, and while the picture portrayed by Munro is certainly simplified, there's some good epigraphic evidence to suggest that among the non-elite classes, everyday attitudes may have been a lot more diverse than we're used to thinking, especially in regard to female homoeroticism.

Some news regarding the Christmas special, which I've spoilered just in case.

http://www.denofgeek.com/uk/tv/doctor-who/48818/doctor-who-christmas-special-rumoured-title

The name of the episode will be called The Doctors. I guess that makes sense considering both The Two Doctors and The Three Doctors were already used before. We'll be seeing 12, 1, and 13, and I have my fingers crossed for other Doctor cameos.

Apparently the director of the special doesn't know who 13 is, which strikes me as quite odd, since she would have directed the regeneration scene, unless it hasn't been written yet.

It might not have been filmed yet. Usually, it's quite a short scene, they could easily get away with waiting until as far away as October or November before filming it.

That soon! I'm torn between wanting David Harewood and a female Doctor. Unfortunately, the bookies seem to be favouring Marshall, and iirc Capaldi was the favourite last time, so it doesn't bode well.

I just... I really hope it's not him. Phoebe Waller-Bridge is apparently also a favorite... but she's also flat-out denied that she's doing it... but then, she could be lying.

I suspected we'd be getting the news sooner rather than later. There was no way they were going to keep it secret until Christmas.

David Harewood is my choice for a male Doctor, Hayley Atwell for a female (and overall) Doctor. There are plenty of other men and women I'd be happy to have in the role, but Kris Mashall is the absolute last person I want in the role. He's a dull, boring, one-note actor who doesn't have a Doctory vibe at all. He could play a parody of The Doctor, but he's not The Doctor. I'll refuse to watch the show if Marshall is 13. That's how badly I don't want him.

I have a feeling I'm going to end up very disappointed, and my guess is that they want a Tennant clone, rather than the right person for the job.

How would you all feel if it was a female doctor? (probably wont be but im curious) I honestly would not give a fuck myself as long as they were good, but it seems to be an issue for a lot of people.

My real worry is that they'll have her fall in love with a male companion, as a gimmick.
I mean, I really don't mind as long as they're good, but I just expect that they might fall to stereotypes or something.

As long as they treat the character with the same respect as they would a male one (no boob jokes, etc), then I don't care about the gender. Gender is meaningless to the character. It's all about how well the character is played.

Although I think a female, and a minority, Doctor is long overdue at this point.

If it's not Harewood, I'd definitely want a woman, but I don't really have an actress in mind. Maybe someone older, slightly matriarchal? I think the people who say the Doctor can't be a woman might accept an older woman more readily than a younger one.

Basically, what I think I'm saying is that Helen Mirren should be the Doctor. Or Maggie Smith.

Yeah i wouldnt mind if the actress played the character well. But about the jokes, they have made fun of the character in past regenerations and their looks, Matt smith's for example.

I did hear about Jodie Whittaker apparently being a likely candidate today and is up there in the betting or something over it.

As awesome as Helen Mirren would be, she's probably too old. After Capaldi, I'm pretty sure we're going to get another younger Doctor.

Still, my choices for a female Doctor would be Hayley Atwell, Tilda Swinton, Gwendoline Christie, Ruth Negga, Rose Leslie, Natalie Dormer, Eva Green, Rosamund Pike, just to name a few. There are plenty of capable women who would be perfect for the role.

It's okay. Once she's got a TARDIS, she can go back and get a younger version of herself to do the more physical scenes for her.

Although Natalie Dormer would make an adorable Doctor.
