I'm planning on picking up ToG for CK2 this wednesday/thursday and I want recommendations on who to play at the 867 start. I'd prefer Norse and Christian characters, but I'm fine with Tengri, Romuva, African, etc.

Ivar "the Boneless" of Sudreyjar. One of the Sons of Lodbrok, and generally a fun character to play. You can expand into Scotland or Ireland, then use that land and troops to start conquering England or wherever your fancy takes you.

That said, I recommend Haesteinn, the chief of Nantes. He's a viking surrounded by weak Bretons, and if you want an easy Norse-Norman or Norse-Norman-English route, he's your guy.

Hmm... I might go this route and, since I'm also planning on getting the Rome DLC, I might try my hand at emulating that Horse Rome from just after Conclave dropped.

Heh, so China surrendered May 20 1938, giving most of their coastal areas, including a nice little enclave that encircles Hong Kong and Macau. That invasion of southern China paid off, as my three corps were able to divert a huge chunk of the Chinese military and were unable to dislodge my beachhead. Then they tried to take a salient in northern China which I quickly sent reinforcements to, then encircled a bunch of stacks, withering them away bit by bit along both the northern coast and the central front. Luckily the central-west front was calm and eventually much of their northern forces collapsed and were destroyed. This left Nanjing and Shanghai virtually undefended and fell without a fight. After the huge collapse and loss of Shanghai and Nanjing in short order, I got notifications saying they surrendered, which to be honest sucks. Alas, I was able to force the Kuomintang to surrender 10 months to the day after the war started.

Meh, leaves more troops to take on Mao and Xibei San Ma. I have absolutely no desire to have a kerfuffle with the USSR until Germany has a go at them. Even then, I'd rather focus on the Pacific, since America will come a knocking almost certainly at some point.

HRE tends to fall a part or not expand much, at least for me. Rarely start when the Umayyads are around.

Either the war will end before 1943 or I'll get annexed before 1943. Either way I'm sure the Spanish people will have no problems at all supporting a totalitarian regime that they just fought a civil war to depose of.
