What're Your Favorite Genres?

Postby SD_Film Artists » Sat Jan 30, 2010 5:38 am

University projects need you Nationstates. *needs to make a survey*

So, what's your favorite movie genres?

This survey can also apply to books, though it's obviously more geared to movies.

Thanks

Satire. More generally, comedy.

This won't be a very scientific poll, though. We are all mad here. :p

War and the Horror... the Horror (a cookie to whoever gets the reference first)

It sucks the fact the war genre has been so stale... but at least there was Passchendaele.

Fantasys are usually the best, except when a really crappy director comes and cuts out good stuff from the books, like the Harry Potter books >:( on the other hand, Avatar was pretty good (would that really be fantasy though?)

I voted for SF and fantasy myself, though I enjoy funny movies (more parody than "comedy" as a genre, I guess), and sports movies too.

Mine's Animation and War. Though at least in terms of real wars, Waltz with Bashir is one of the few examples of the two genres coming together.

Avatar is Sci-Fi, thuogh some movies including Avatar can blur the boundries, and sometimes Sci-Fi is just lazily lumped into the Fantasy genre anyway.

the poll seems to be not working.

real sf, not "sci-fy" (which is mostly sci-fantasy), fantasy and anime.
mystery and action adventure too, but the former preferably and the later only if,
they are also sf, and or fantasy.

what i'm NOT interested in is drama and comedy of a sort that you can see on the street in everyday life.

guns and cars forget it, even horses and swords are overdone as far as i'm concerned.

i want to see (REAL) strangeness, and not portrayed as 'demonic' either.
truth isn't what i say. isn't what you say. isn't what anybody says. truth is what is there, when no one is saying anything.

"economic freedom" is "the cake"

Same here. I posted a thread in Technical, which so far remains unanswered.

Edit: I have a solution, for me at least. I tried to vote for more than two options, somehow overlooking the fact that the poll allowed you to only vote for two. It works fine for me now.

If you voted for two options or less, and it still didn't work for you, then I can't explain it.

"Our progress in degeneracy appears to me to be pretty rapid. As a nation, we began by declaring that "all men are created equal." We now practically read it "all men are created equal, except negroes" When the Know-Nothings get control, it will read "all men are created equal, except negroes, and foreigners, and Catholics." When it comes to this I should prefer emigrating to some country where they make no pretence of loving liberty -- to Russia, for instance, where despotism can be taken pure, and without the base alloy of hypocracy." - President Abraham Lincoln.

Documentary (not docudrama) and, to some degree, satire. I also own several VHS tapes of recorded musical performances, which I enjoy watching and listening to as well, provided the sound system is good.

I suppose my ideal film would consist of ninety minutes of plotless, humanless scenery. With a musical score. Of course, such a thing probably wouldn't do very well at the box office. I'm not really interested in films about people, their emotions, and their interactions -- although, as I mentioned, a good satirical film makes me laugh, and is therefore an exception.

I am going to say SciFi as that is what I usually say, however my actual favourite genre that never appears in lists is the "survival" genre. It encompasses films like Alien, The Day After Tomorrow and Night of the Living Dead.

Yes the first half definitely is, but zombie films are a difficult territory to classify. The Evil Dead or The Beyond wouldn't, but Bio Zombie and 28 Days would. I think there is a fine line that tips survival in to regular horror, which isn't quite my thing.

I actually would not say I have a favourite genre. I like anything that is philosophical or has a message (a subtle one, I don't like it when a movie or book gets too preachy).
Wait an hour, and it will be now again
