It's a rather depressing WW2 movie from 1956. I think in many, perhaps most countries, a movie like this about their own military would have been banned or suppressed in some way. But it's from the era when most adults in the USA were either in the war or at least one family member was in the war, so they knew the score.
Also freedom of speech was considered sacred in the post-WW2 period, because after all that's one of the things our military fought for. Sad that freedom of speech is now considered something bad by so many. Perhaps after the next war that will change back. The way things are going, many people are wondering if that war is coming soon. But let's stay optimistic.
