What Richard Did. Really good Irish film. A rewarding slice of realism amongst all the dumb fantasy films around at the moment.

Infinity War..

..I don't think it's a spoiler to say it's a fucking waste of time waiting through all the credits for one big let down of a teaser scene.. don't bother.

After watching Nostalghia (1983) recently, I decided to do a complete rewatch of Tarkovsky's films -- though not sequentially -- so I could nab the last one I'd never seen in a wider context. I kicked off the project by watching Soderbergh's Solaris (2002), which I was skeptical of, but it won me over, and then preceding through the canon until I finally saw The Mirror (1975). It's ambitious, even for arthouse and I'm divided -- in general the most interesting segments tend to be the ones Tarkovsky lingers on the least, but there is something almost hypnotic and moving about the autobiographical nature of many of the scenes. I'd probably rank it pretty low, but it did confirm for me that Tarkovsky has never made a bad film.

Only got Ivan's Childhood (1962) and Andrei Rublev (1966) left.

I struggle with Tarkovsky. I love Stalker, and enjoy parts of Andrei Rublev (the witches scenes particularly) and Ivan's Childhood. But I generally find his films beautiful to look at but ponderous, and the dialogue just irritates me.

Men and Chicken, weird Danish film, kind of funny but I felt like I was watching a satire but I was unfamiliar with what was being satirised.

Reindeer Games. Read the piece on wikipedia before watching it, I'm not sure why it got such a negative reviews, it didn't seem that bad to me.

Four Weddings and a Funeral

Very British. The best part is when Rowan Atkinson weds the couple but screws it up.

The Martian

Pretty good, apart from some occasional clunky dialogue, and being too long. It could have lost about half an hour and been better for it.

If you haven't read the book, you should. The book is fantastic. Honestly, I read the book first, then watched the movie, and as I was sitting there watching it, I kept thinking, "Wow. Without the context of the book I'd have no idea what was even going on."

Anyway, last movie I watched was Wreck It Ralph, because my girlfriend has never seen a whole bunch of the more relatively recent Disney movies, and I found it in the closet first (and also Wreck It Ralph is a great movie)

But it tells you something you've known for years! Who doesn't want to see a reveal they've been talking about the entire time?

Last movie was Lu Over the Wall, because I'm going to use MoviePass as much as I can until it goes away...

...I might be what's making moviepass go away. They even started making me send them photos of my movie tickets.

Lu Over the Wall was weird, it was a Japanese animated film that was very much via Friz Freling/Tex Avery. When the mermaid sings and makes everyone dance it was straight out of a Tex Avery cartoon. I mean, it still had the confusing (if you're not super into it) anime style mythology (something about a curse, and that curse rehappening but not for reasons you thought but gets undone for something I also didn't understand and the ending was good? Bad? I don't know. People seemed happy but also like an entire people were displaced? Or not? I have no idea.) But it killed an hour and a half. I didn't regret it.

I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season." -MLK Jr.

As good as it gets - it's a classic. Fully formed characters, a good script, great acting.

In part, Crazy Heart.

Wonderful movie, pretty intimate about something that is, by all accounts, kind of by the books, but also feels genuinely sympathetic to all parties (haven't finished it yet, though, so who knows) in the situation. Mostly revolves around the main character, though. Kind of wished we saw more of his love interest's perspective as well.

In full, The Death of Stalin.

First time watching an Iannucci film. Pretty interesting and funny, a bit detached from the editing style but it's very much intentioned, especially with the scenes that do allow shots to run in their fuller extent. Everyone's fantastic in their acting, the movie itself works pretty well towards its concept I think.

Watched both of them on the plane. It's great because it's free, but shit because the sound is the fucking worst up there.

Deepwater Horizon. From the trailer it didn’t look good but it was a lot better than I thought it would be. Mark Wahlberg is a great actor.
