A fantastic film.

Agreed. It managed to make vampires interesting again! No small task these days.

I hear the American remake was also surprisingly good, but I haven't seen it.

Probably the best US remake of a foreign language film I have seen. I still prefer the original though.

Well, I suppose it would have to be 'Year 2000'.

It's a pretty standard introductory course, really, but my professor insists on showing full movies and having intelligent discussions on their entirety rather than showing segments based on a lesson plan (as courses of this nature usually work). So far, we've viewed Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life (which I enjoyed, but felt was way too far into formalism for my personal taste) and Jane Campion's The Piano (which I also enjoyed, despite a few flaws).

It is worth seeing, it isn't that bad, but it will always suffer in comparison to Chinatown.

I mean, that's a given.

I struggled with The Tree of Life, but that was mainly because Brad Pitt's character looked and behaved like my dad, so it was an uncomfortable watch for me. Never seen The Piano.

Ah. Must be tough to sit through in a film like that. I myself got a little uncomfortable near the end, due to my relationship with my brother.

I would recommend The Piano. I had a few gripes with it, but it features solid performances from Holly Hunter and Harvey Keitel.

Batman. The original, from 1989. Except for Jack Nicholson's performance as the Joker, the rest of the movie is kinda boring to me.

Wreck-It Ralph - Good, without being great - animation is decent and can't complain about the voice work, several nice nods to different arcade games but it was all a bit predictable - 6.5/10

Frank - Lots of weird fun to be had here, Fassbender is superb (as per - don't think I've seen him put in a bad performance yet) and the rest of the cast put in strong performances too - 8/10

Verlorene Lust Welt. It's a German horror/porn film about prehistoric creatures that like to attack human women, and cavewomen who like to attack human men. Judging from the higher production values and greater emphasis on storytelling than you see in modern porn I'd guess late 1970s or early 1980s, but I'm not for sure... anyone know what years Bridgette Kerkove was active? Anyway, it wasn't bad... I'd go 7.5/10. You've gotta like porn in order to enjoy it, though.

Today I watched The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death and I must say I don't know how to feel about this second instalment of a British take on the tale of La Llorona.

The Host, I didn't recognise Saoirse Ronan at first but I think she will make the transition to being an adult actor well. The film itself was let down by the characters being a bit one dimensional, either really good or really bad, and not really exploring the premise.

Nightcrawler - I've been meaning to watch this for a little while, finally got round to it last night. I thought this was an excellent film, superb performance from Jake Gyllenhaal in the lead role and excellent support from Riz Ahmed. It was well paced and easy to get hooked into the story as it developed, the ending was also a refreshing change of pace from the usual Hollywood fare.
I was half expecting Lou to get his comeuppance, either through legal channels or getting shot by an angry relative/drug dealer - you don't usually get to see the bad guy come out on top.
Well worth watching - 8.5/10

Run, Lola, Run (or Lola Rennt in it's native German). A nice, fun little film that vaguely reminds me of Tarantino.

The Gamechangers, BBC film about Rockstar Games and the making of GTA San Andreas and the law cases associated with it. Bill Paxton is a fantastic actor, Daniel Radcliffe isn't, if there as an award for least convincing beard he should win.

I really enjoyed that movie. Particularly the soundtrack.

Recently watched Cloverfield. Some aspects of it are done beautifully, but then other things are just mind-numblingly stupid and formulaic. One thing that really got on my nerves, and something that gets on my nerves in some other action movies as well, is when a character is wounded, they'll be wincing at every move they make in one scene, and then a couple of scenes later they're moving around like nothing is wrong.

I recently watched Anthony Mann’s Cimarron. I was surprised to learn it wasn’t all that popular―indeed, it was a commercial failure―at the time of its release; I liked it. I’ll have a look at the 1931 version if I can find it.

My advice to you would be to skip The Transporter Refueled.

Speaking of which...

In theaters: The Transporter Refueled. Since the above mentioned problem of Hollywood Healing had to be pointed out to me by others after the fact, I didn't drop any points from it because it didn't affect my enjoyment of the film. In other words, I rather liked this movie but you've gotta be a hardcore action fan who's there to be entertained rather than made to think in order to enjoy it as much as I did. 9/10

At home: Ju-on. This is my first time watching the original Japanese version (seen The Grudge twice now), and although they're only barely different films I did find, strangely enough, that I enjoyed the American version slightly more. Still, this is an excellent horror classic that you should definitely check out if you like scary shit and don't mind subtitles. 9.8/10

I didn't really care for the 1931 version, but that's mostly because I'm not a fan of Richard Dix in the first place.
