The Creeping Barrage is the name given to a method of firing artillery. At the beginning of Trench Warfare the basic tactic was to fire lots of artillery at enemy trenches for a sustained period of time and to stop firing just before the infantry attacked. However this method wasn’t very successful as the German had built strong bunkers and were able to man the defences in the time between the bombardment ending and the infantry getting to the trenches. A solution to the problem of the time lag between the bombardment and the arrival of the infantry was to change the way that the artillery was fired. Instead of just aiming at the same target the creeping barrage moved forward at a prearranged pace.

"Documentary" about the dark side of Martin Luther King. Not everybody's cup of tea, I suspect most watchers don't make it all the way through.

Tried watching Tarkovsky's Nostalgia, like watching a really long perfume ad, gave up after an hour. Load of old tosh.

Dead of Night, British horror film from 1945. Think it may have been the first film of a genre I hate, the horror anthology. Not very good. I didn't know before that making horror films in the UK was banned during WWII.

Alien Covenant.

Pretty decent film in the Alien Franchise. Explores less horror themes, than philosophical and origin themes, which is good, if they take the whole thing a bit too far and make it seem a bit to heavyhanded with some of the characters. However, overall, it definitely is one of the better films of the year I've seen thus far, probably only Logan that I've actually seen this year would be better than that. Though all bets are off with Dunkirk hitting theatres very soon.

Memento. Compelling and smart thriller. The central conceit of events played out in reverse order isn't as annoying as you might think.

Rewatched The World's End for about the third time. I love the Cornetto trilogy, they can stand up to being rewatched many times and still be enjoyable - not true for many films.

The Beast Must Die, a weird curiosity of a horror film with Peter Cushing and an early appearance by Michael Gambon (sporting flares and huuuge sideburns). There is a 'werewolf break' where a clock counts down while you guess who the werewolf is...

Handsome Devil, pretty cliched in terms of plot (artsy high schooler befriends sporty high schooler, who must now choose between being artsy or sporty), but the characters, at least, weren't as cliched as they seemed at the start
