How to make love like an Englishman.

Enjoyable.
Pros: Peace, love, faith, intersectionality and vegetables. :)
Cons: Militarism, capitalism... Well, kyriarchy, basically.

I forgot I also watched 21 Jump Street recently, given it is a remake of a tv show I've never seen, about life in a school system I didn't experience, it's not surprising I found it so forgettable.

Nothing like a bunch of Korean Panokseon ships crashing into them flimsy Japanese ships.

Also, Captain America: Civil War, might be the strongest MCU film to date.

For Saturday:

The French Connection (1971), with Gene Hackman. NYPD detective Popeye Doyle busts a French-based drug smuggling ring, chases a train in a Pontiac.

Brute Force (1947), with Burt Lancaster. Inmates attempt to break out of a prison run by a sadistic guard.

The Drum (1938), with Raymond Massey. Brown people kill the ruler of an Indian state in order to start a revolt against the British, are rewarded for their troubles with some .303 caliber civilization from the white man.

Birdemic - I have not laughed this hard for a long time. It is just a special movie, but maybe not for all humors. I was losing it, though.

For Sunday,

The White Angel (1936), with Kay Francis. Hammy and preachy biopic of Florence Nightingale. And for that matter, what was it with Warner Bros. and the Crimean War in 1936?

Toward the Unknown (1956), with William Holden. Former Korean War POW battles his ghosts as he tries to become a test pilot. More of a human drama and less of an Air Force recruiting ad than most test pilot movies from the period.

The Virgin Spring (1960)-The trope making revenge movie. Inspired "Last House On the Left" which was, IMHO, a bad movie except for a few choice splatter scenes. "Virgin Spring" has a very repulsive rape scene and smartly also calls the cathartic act of vengeance into question. Very artfully done and one of Bergman's better films. My only beef is that the characterizations seemed so quaint. The victim is unbearably sweet, though she's thankfully more complex than just a Pollyanna archetype. The assailants are all filthy and look like criminals form the second they show up. Had this story been done unironically and less artfully, it would be an after school special. Worth watching though, especially since it's free on YouTube right now.

The Woman in the Dunes (1964)-Super great Japanese art house movie about a city slicker who ventures into the countryside and is forced into slave labor by a bunch of villagers, shoveling sand day in and day out. Sounds boring on paper, but I think this is one of those elusive art films that is legitimately good, in that it has something to say about society. Basically, we all rail against the machine until we are tamed. Great acting by the two leads. One of the best "prison" films (if you can call it that) I've ever seen. I'm saying that as someone who normally hates those movies.

The Hurt Locker (2008)-Equal parts dumb action movie and clever subversions of dumb action movies. As far as a depiction of the Iraq War goes, I like Battle For Haditha best. Honestly, I don't think truly good Iraq War movies are a thing right now.

Captain America: Civil War

It was good but I'm tiring of Marvel films. There's just too many of them and I think the market is getting over-saturated in superhero films now.

Speaking of... I'm off to see X-Men: Apocalypse today.

Pokémon: The Rise of Darkrai

Meh it was ok.

Had some sweet moments, some cool moments.

It would be better if it didn't have the same plot points as the first 9 movies before it.

It's important to remember that The Virgin Spring is based on authentic folklore; the archetypal portrayals is a decision to hew closely to the original storytelling.

For me, the most recent film was A Matter of Life and Death. I always have mixed feelings when it comes to Powell and Pressburger. They make such whimsical, charming films with great scenes, but the pacing is always off and inconsistent. Nonetheless, this might be their best premise.

That's a good point. Anyway, it's a minor quibble I have with what's a pretty great movie.

Maybe my favorite touch is the horrible irony that
in avenging the death of his child, Max Von Sydow's character becomes a child murderer himself.

The Six Wives of Henry VIII. It was divided in episodes, but it's supposed to be a dramatized movie-mentary. Narrated by Dr. David Starkey.
