Cold Fish (2010)

This movie reminded me a lot of Straw Dogs. I didn't care much for Straw Dogs. I didn't care much for this either.

Curse of the Cat People (1944), with Simone Simon and Kent Smith. A shipbuilder's daughter befriends the ghost of his first wife (who in the original Cat People would transform into a cat when aroused).

Honestly, it felt like the entire storyline was somewhat forced, and there was a whole subplot involving two of the minor characters that seemed like it was tacked on for no apparent reason.

Stick with the first one, it's much better.

The Duke of Burgundy, seemed a bit like an Emmanuelle film directed by Peter Greenaway from a Robert Coover script. More interesting than I thought it would be, but I am not sure I get what was intended.

I've never seen the second Cat People, but I always thought it was a bizarre idea for a sequel. It doesn't even seem to be in the same genre as the first.

The first one is pretty good, not one of my favorites. The male lead has to be one of the most horrendously unsympathetic main characters I've ever seen in a horror film.

Impulsively marries the Cat woman, even when she's honest about her condition. Gets angry when she doesn't sleep with him. Falls in love with his gal Friday and tries to dump his wife.

His motivations are understandable, but what a douche.

Risen. I was pleasantly surprised by how effective and engaging it was, especially during the first half of the film. Being a religious film, the second half ran into some pretty typical problems with heavy-handedness and pastiche, but the script was generally very good and the main actors did a very good job. The historical content was solid too, which is where a good chunk of the unexpected strength comes from. I was expecting a ho-hum, middling film that would be interesting only to religious or historical specialists, but really very decent quality.

You're either going to love this movie, or leave feeling incredibly frustrated, depending on how much patience you have and how much you love art films. For those who possess both aforementioned traits, the reward is a thoroughly minimalist approach to filmmaking and the chance to savor a supremely pure performance from the film's star, George Clooney, who lets his character's vulnerability and his flaws shine through.

Based on the novel "A Very Private Gentleman" by Martin Booth and billed as a suspense thriller, "The American" is unlike any conventional film in that genre. There are no high-voltage fight sequences, explosions or car chases. Instead, it is a stylized, in-depth character study, carefully constructed according to European sensibilities, but borrowing a guise that can best be described as a western with strong Italian overtones.

Long scenes with no dialogue flow into one other from the get go and can get tedious if you do not make a connection with the character early on. For almost the entire first hour, the story revolves around setting up Clooney's character in Italy and sending him to work, meticulously manufacturing a rifle that he eerily recognizes may land him in harm's way.

Still, Clooney is in his element, turning in a first-rate performance, as the brooding, soul-searching criminal, who seeks to escape his inner reality. Without words to echo the emotions he seeks to express, he relies primarily on understated subtlety, the look in his eye, a faint flicker of a smile from the corner of his mouth, a nod from that perfectly chiseled chin, to crescendo the heightened suspense and emotion the film builds towards, climaxing in a way that may not be unique, but is reflected in an incomparably unique way.

10 Cloverfield Lane: Very good psychological movie that is, well a not really successor, but is related to Cloverfield. All the actors in this film were awesome, especially John Goodman.

The ending actually did surprise me a bit,

I really did not expect any alien aspects to the movie, i figured there would be a reference or two to what happened in Cloverfield but for the most part would not have anything of the sort in the film. So when Mary Elizabeth Winstead' character climbed out of the bunker and got on top of a car next to the corn field, and saw a fricking alien ship in the distance i was actually genuinely surprised. And from what ive seen people appeared to be mixed on the ending, i liked it, thought it was done well.

I saw Captain America: Civil War last night. Goddamn, that was a really good movie. It did everything right that Bats v. Supes did wrong. The action sequences were deliciously brutal and I loved all the characters. My only criticism is the idea that the Sokovia Accords would have been effective. Lol, yeah right.

Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. I can see why it's acquired something of a reputation for being overlooked over the years, it's stylish and almost slick, but essentially hollow and one-note. I'm glad I finally watched it, but it's little more than a curio.

Captain America: The First Avenger

Not bad, but needs more Hayley Atwell.

This is always true of everything. Always.

Captain America:Civil War. First time going to a movie with the people from my new job at a special effects house, from as far as I can tell in the credits the only special effects house in the world not working on that movie. But it was interesting to hear them pick out techniques in the special effects.

I dug it. I dug Spiderman, I dug Black Panther. I dug that the heroes didn't resolve their differences because their moms had the same name. I dug

that they both had a point AND that since they both had a point neither side was 'won over' at the end, all they resolved that was Cap was right about Bucky that he was being framed and even then Iron Man had a believable reason to still want to go through Cap to get at Bucky.

Even though Zemo was not Zemo he was an absolutely wonderful villain in a way that even Loki wasn't. He wasn't a villain you could punch, or even see or know he was doing what he was doing. His plan wasn't 'insert Hulk, make him lose control' but rather to fundamentally destroy them from within.

I also loved the lean on Spiderman's core origins when Tony asked why he was doing it. Without explaining it or even using The Phrase (great power etc) he says if you can do something and you don't then what happens is your fault and he looks like a teenager who six months ago lost his uncle to a murderer he could have stopped and it hits you in the feels. Also, the "I don't know how many fights you've been in, but there's not usually this much chit chat" was hilarious.

Also, Giant Man! And, "Throw this at this...oh man, I thought that was a water truck."

Heavy handed love struck Vision. Kinda cute.

"Where's Thor or Banner? If I had misplaced a pair of 30 megaton warheads, I'd be in a lot of trouble..." Good line.

I dug it. After the fanboy sheen wore off and I started thinking about it as a story, I still like it. So that's good.

The Revenant... Some messed up stuff in that movie. 9/10.

Cupcakes - A cute, feel-good Israeli film about a bunch of friends living in the same apartment block and accidentally becoming the country's next entrants to the "UniverSong Contest". Lots of heart, well-written. Not exactly the deepest or most moving film you'll ever see, but if you want something to cheer you up or put a smile on your face then this will do it.

Duel, strange experience in that I last watched it just after it came out when it still seemed all shiny and new, watching it again now it seemed so dated. Not a big Spielberg fan but this is probably my second favourite of his films after Catch Me If You Can.

Green Room (2015)

Quite good. Most probably the sleeper genre flick of the year. Probably too violent and nihilistic to find a wider audience, but bound to become a well-liked cult film, I think.

Gods of Egypt. Much better than I was expecting. Yes, it's essentially silly fluff, but it's also a very authentic call-back to the type of sword-and-sandal movies there were a lot of in the 50s and 60s. I've always had a soft spot for the genre, and, despite some weak spots, this film is welcome homage to it.
