Beyond Clueless, an analysis of the true nature of teen movies.
CVT Temp wrote:I mean, we can actually create a mathematical definition for evolution in terms of the evolutionary algorithm and then write code to deal with abstract instances of evolution, which basically equates to mathematical proof that evolution works. All that remains is to show that biological systems replicate in such a way as to satisfy the minimal criteria required for evolution to apply to them, something which has already been adequately shown time and again. At this point, we've pretty much proven that not only can evolution happen, it pretty much must happen since it's basically impossible to prevent it from happening.

The Battle of Algiers (1966)

I forgot how unrelenting and grim this movie was. I really wish there were more war movies like it.

Rewatched the original version of Like Water for Chocolate after about twenty years. Rather more Mills and Boon than I remembered it, but still love the food elements. I think magic realism is primarily a literary genre, film is less magical because it is someone else's vision of the magic, but this is one of the better film versions of a magical realist novel.

Incredible war film. One of the best ever made.

Heaven Can Wait (1943). Charming, but frankly not one of Lubitsch's better films.

The Conjuring 2. I liked it a lot, especially its English setting. I liked it more than the first one.

Fury (2014)

I like a good "squad" war movie. Basically a movie that focuses on a bunch of guys in the middle of a war (usually the conflict World War II and typically only the USA/USSR/Russia make these sort of movies). This one was a very stylish cliche storm though. I marginally enjoyed it, but the finale was too Rambo for me.

So Wardaddy says he promised to keep his men alive, but he decides to put up an arguably unnecessary last stand at the drop of a hat, so the movie can have a big climatic action set piece. That's even worse than the "protect the bridge" climax of Saving Private Ryan

House of Games (1987). Ultimately it won me over, but the acting style and the script were both definitely a lot more stilted than I was expecting, considering the film's reputation.

I've always felt they made a mistake going family friendly. An R-rated book deserves an R-rated movie (and Dennis Nedry deserves to be disemboweled onscreen).

Watched Captain America: Civil War over the weekend. Marvel's got a better track record of letting their heroes get shit done than DC so far, but they screwed the pooch on this one... when the main villain does nothing but orchestrate prison breaks for the entire movie, you put him in the ground, not a cell. It's not vengeance, just logic. Still, otherwise it's three-quarters of a great action movie and probably Marvel's most quotable movie yet so I can't bring myself to shave off more than one point for a single quibble. 9/10

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol on TV. Great and exciting film, even if it seems rather improbable sometimes.

Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.

Powder Room, its origins as a stage play were a bit too clear, and the MMDA lesbianism seemed a bit gratuitous.

Pitch Black (2000)

I can see why Vin Diesel became a star after that movie. He owns pretty much every scene he's in. The movie itself is an above average sci-fi/horror that follows in the footsteps of Aliens. First half dragged on too long, second half was pretty good.
