I feel like Matthew Islands is making a mistake in assuming that a videogame plot (particularly CoD) will be coherent with real life fundamentalism.

Scratch that, a fiction plot.

It doesn't matter how it would happen in real life. You're taking CoD to a level of seriousness it has never deserved.
It's just me against the world.

Jim Sterling interviews... A guy, I guess, from Digital Homicide.

Yeah, it's really weird, the guy never says whether he's the main developer or if he's just one of the developers.

But, oh my God, is this Digital Homicide stooge ignorant, disrespectful, and stupid, not to mention unprepared for all of the bullshit he brings up in order to defend his points.

I want to teabag this motherfucker until he gets a bruise on his forehead.

For anyone that doesn't know, Digital Homicide are a Steam Early Access "developer"of video games that somehow make it past Greenlight despite being aggressively bad.

Look up "Slaughtering Grounds" on YouTube for an example.

There comes a point when a plot is so bad, even a suspension of reality can't make it make sense.

The Matthew Islands wrote:This is terrible because it assumes that literally like every intelligence agency was asleep and would have failed to notice a Liutenant General in the US army buddying up to literally the worlds most wanted terrorist.

This was all explained in "Loose Ends".

Specifically, that there weren't any. The only physical records that Makarov and Shepherd ever had any contact was in the bunker on the Russia-Georgia border. You know, the one that half the 141 dies retrieving? The whole point of "Loose Ends" was that Shepherd knew that they would eventually catch up to him, so he eliminated the only two threats to him (the data in the bunkhouse, and the 141 | Soap and Price were expected to die in Afghanistan).

In cast you missed it, the US has been at war since 2001. It wouldn't turn any heads to see a US general travel to a field of war considering he's, you know, a US general.

That entire level was fucking stupid. Not because of the shooting civilians bit, but because of much of a weak reason it was for war. The IRA used American Armalites and got money from stupid yanks through NORAID but that wasn't a reason to just straight up declare war on America. Once again it rely's on the complete absence of just about every intelligence officer ever.

Yeah but the IRA was the IRA. The entire fucking point of "No Russian" was that Allen's body was left at the scene, so the only evidence Russia had of who was behind it was an American CIA agent disguised as a Russian soldier.
Makarov then shouted in the streets for three days (Russia was already "ready" for war ever since Zakhaev) before the invasion.
It was all a false flag, as I said before, and like most false flags it worked.

Why was the US only relying on 1 system of early warning?
Why did nobody notice the entire Russian military mobilising?
How did Europe manage to miss the Russian military heading over Europe towards America.
Why the US navy not notice the Russian army heading to the East Coast? Or the Coast guard?
How did Russia transport all those troops to the east coast in like, a day?
How did Russia achieve air superiority over the East Coast?
Why did no other NATO country not notice?

1: Your question is wrong. It's explicitly said that they aren't. It's also explicitly said that every system they have went down before "Wolverines!" because the ACS was hacked prior to its recovery.
2: They had already mobilized back in MW1.
3: Why do you assume they took a straight line to Virginia? Not even passenger planes go in a straight line to their destination.
4: Planes flying higher than the human eye can see, and certainly higher than the human eye can shoot.
5: By flying them? How do you think?
6: Because America didn't really have an air force following the ACS incident. This is all integral to the plot of "Wolverines!", I'm surprised you missed it.
7: They did. Russia invaded them too, later on, which resulted in Russia losing the war. But that's outside of MW2 - I should reiterate I suppose that the entirety of MW2 takes place in about one week.

Of course that didn't actually happen due to the unplanned survival of Soap and Price, and the events of "Contingency" - everyone ended up losing because of it.

That entire mission and sequence was just awful.[/quote]

Thought more about this, and I'd like to start a rant.

Think about it for a bloody moment, Elite: Dangerous is absolutely a game about Quantity. This is a game that is designed to be representative of the actual fucking Milky Way galaxy. Do you have any idea how many "systems" in the real life galaxy that don't even have orbiting objects around them? E:D is somewhat designed to reflect this, although, being a game that's supposed to be appealing, they've beefed up the raw numbers of stuff in any given system. And yes, even that stuff is going to be generic in type. Why? Because bloody reality. And the exploration game, as I said before, takes full advantage of this staggering quantity. Using tools provided in the game, explorers trek out knowing full well what they're getting into. Space. Is. Boring. Unless you go out of you way to make it interesting. There is an entire undertaking on the Frontier forums to catalog the record-breaking objects out there. Everything from the star with the great distance between its partner in a binary system to the lightest gas giant. To sift through the contents of this actual representation of a galaxy to find the gems is what actual astronomers do today. And to have this reflected in an engaging way is part of what makes this game great. Is there any other current game out there that reflects the sheer scope of what Frontier has done here? Genuine question, there may be another, I dunno. I know No Man's Sky is going to be doing similar soon.

What draws a person to mindlessly subject themselves to what must seem like an agonizingly painful experience, to others? The answers are surely different depending on the person. Me . . . I do it for the wonder of it. I'm playing a game that has done its best to accurately portray a galaxy and I can explore that. The thought is an exciting one, even if the practice ends up being a little duller than what the imagination provides. I can go to a place a million people have explored and see one of the landmarks of the galaxy. With a little bit of work, I can get to a point where I can go to places where no one else has gone before. 400 billion systems. There is a sincere thrill in that. A thrill that cannot be fully explained it words. I even tried to play a bit of the record-keeping game myself. I actually even established a few benchmarks for newly thought records for people to beat. There are definitely things to do, even if from outward looks there appears to be none.

It's all such a serene and surreal experience. This is a game that I go to to unwind. After watching Miranda Lawson running around on countertops getting her genetically-engineered ass shot off by 10 Geth and their mothers, this is a game where I can blissfully slip into a world where the rest of the frustrating gaming world does not exist. Charting systems in deep space is a seriously effective stress reliever. It's both hardcore and very casual at the same time. You can even legitimately get up from the computer to go grab a drink and a snack during an epic journey to the opposite side of the larger binary+ systems (not advisable near Terran space, though). This game is absolutely beautiful and it's extremely easy to get caught up in the sights.

In ultimate conclusion to this essay, E:D is less about the state of the content in the game, but what you make of the content in the game.

Yeah but there is no content in the game.

I can get a $60 experience for free with google images.

If you really want a sightseeing space game, there's a really good free one I forgot the name of.

Just because something is intended to be in some way, and it fills out its intentions doesn't mean it's good.

Google Images doesn't put you in control of a star fighter/scout/freighter and let you fly around blowing other ships up/investigate uncharted systems/transport (illegal) goods. All in the name of profit and glory. There's also a faction system in the game, but I haven't been a part of that much, so I admit that I can't speak to just how dynamic that is. Last I played, I remember people were in the process of building a starbase somewhere.
Romantic slut. Self-deprecating egotist. Benevolent communist.

I'd love a game with the whole space exploration schtick, but also with squabbling factions. Oh, and sometimes the planets are inhabited with species at different levels of development, which you could then murder/enslave/peacefully catalogue.

Thank God for Jim F*cking Sterlingson.

That would be cool.
