I am presumably the 19-billionth person to answer this question, but its something I've asked myself a few times so I'll take a stab at it.

For one, it is suprisingly humorous. It's vaguely like a pixar film, or any number of the 'classic' cartoons of the 1990s; in that its humor is not blatant, forced, or immature; but it is almost hidden and unlikely to be wholly understood by target demographics. From puns to ironies, moments of self-awareness to entries of character; there are many legitimate laugh out loud moments - far too many to mention - and infinitely many moments that merit at least a snicker. Something else is that, unsurprisingly, it's utterly wholesome. This can be sometimes a detriment - the morals at the end of certain episodes necessary to classify it as an educational show are invariably sappy - but honestly the innocence is a welcome change for a person like me who often watches/plays entities that trend towards black comedy; Fallout, Doctor Who, et cetera.

Now, those are both good qualities, but they are not unique to MLP. Even the songs, which are usually thoughtfully-placed - i.e. they are never so common as to be unwelcome like they might be in a musical which insists on another song every few minutes; instead they are always (with the exception of one particular episode) put in only where they make sense and add to the narrative - and of suprisingly high caliber, are not the main draw. Instead it is the characters, oh the wonderful characters, that are the greatest of draws. Both the main characters and the recurring ones; almost all are incredibly likable despite theoretically fulfilling stock roles or at least combinations thereof. Seriously, I can't even put it into words, the main cast of six has the best combination of characters and interactions/relationships thereof I have ever seen - even better than those in the Teen Titans, the only thing in recent memory that comes close.

Before we start with the new episode today-- I've noticed something.

I'm the only one here to do "live" commentary on new episodes (that is, between acts) recently, where it used to be commonplace. What happened?

The thread is not as popular as it used to be.

Can I just point out that there was never a pretense for MLP:FiM to be an "educational" show since Season 1? The "E/I" icon was removed long ago (not to mention that the Hub and Discover Family, being cable networks, were never required to have it in the first place).

I will have to say something about the morals though. Part of what attracted me to MLP:FiM in the first place was the way it handled the morals-- in the first couple of seasons, they were directly relevant to the characters and the overarching plot rather than just being a consequence of the individual plots and stated so it would go over the kids' heads. This actually was one of the main things differentiating MLP:FiM from many children's shows, and one that helped the morals be taken much more seriously. It's actually kind of regrettable that the morals are simply morals now...

Well, I thought some of the posters who used to do live commentary were still active (Quid, for example, in fact (s)he did it for Party Pooped, but not to the same extent).

I never did that in first place.

Doctor Who. Although it didn't attempt to teach as much morals, but rather teach kids history and science and engineering. Then it dropped the educational angle at somepoint. :p

I never understood that to be a strictly "children's" program. "Family" at best.

And so, it is time for "live" commentary yet again.

Dialogue is too ridiculous and plot devices too contrived for this to be real... and it was indeed a dream. At least we know the "spirit" that turned Luna into NMM.

Luna... wants nightmares? Seems... somewhat paradoxical. But oddly appropriate for the pony of dreams...

Cold open.
Rainbow power again.
Nightmare moon.
All a dream, but the danger is real.

Well, someone else is doing it...

Spike always gets left out... and it's not always a bad thing.

Hey, Twilight gets to write letters again!

Wow, this episode is going to be world-building fodder... but was the Tantabus necessarily the spirit that transformed Luna in the real world? It sounds like its only supposed to be confined to her...

Something tells me that the Mane Six also have a "spirit" that can appear in dreams...

The Inception references are strong in this one...

Pinkie: even her dreams are random.

"It's nice to be the pet for once..." Fluttershy BDSM enthusiast confirmed.

Singing flowers are scary things for adventure pone... but the flute solo was actually kind of cool...

Of course Twilight dreams about studying...

No, don't give up now, Luna! But really, shouldn't she get the other's help?

It's everypony's dream now, and it ain't Ponyville no more.

The callbacks. The callbacks. It's. Just. Too. Much.

And Big Mac wants to be an alicorn princess.

The way they handled the resolution got really repetitive, even for this show, but the moral was great, and it was just way too fun. Two hooves up. (Or maybe all four? I could swear I was about to fall over at several points.)

Also, watch out for Ameri complaining about Flutterbat...
