Looking at some of the comments on the wikia brought up an interesting point--Spike didn't actually do anything selfish until Cadence insinuated it during her questioning. This is somewhat flawed though as 1) Spike's line "I could tell these delegates anything as long as they think it came from Twilight" came before that and could arguably be a sign that he was already contemplating it but still realized he had to get priorities straight, and the writers simply decided as a matter of climax to show the selfish parts last, and 2) the laughing after the insinuation.

Oh come on, Spike had a couple of gem cupcakes on the house and a foot rub, Celestia has a frigging chariot to transport her and each of the princesses have their own castle.*

Spike is hardly a villain in the pampering department. His decisions though, yeah he dun goofed but what do you expect from a kid given the responsibility of a government official?

*I think Luna's own castle was mentioned at some point but I forget when.
