I'm actually going to side with him here. There are two crucial differences between Twilight and Moondancer that make the symbolism less valid than it may appear:

1: Twilight was never jaded about friendship like Moondancer was. She may have declined her friend's invitations to go to Moondancer's party, but that wasn't necessarily a sign that she was antipathic toward it. And when she said "The fate of Equestria does not rest on me making friends", it was simply that. Her mind was completely engrossed in proving the Nightmare Moon prophecy-- you don't exactly need friends for that (Notwithstanding what eventually happened, of course). In the song about her "BBBFF", her line about finding it silly to meet other ponies is more read about a stronger desire for book study rather than being dismissive of the concept of friendship, since only later did she know that they made her life complete. (That last one is a little more open to interpretation though, I can see it either way, but I prefer to take it at face value in light of how she simply wanted to "book study" more.)
2: Moondancer was explicitly said to be on a path of "opening up" to friendship when Twilight failed to show up to her party. That failure alone caused her to go on a different path to reject friendship altogether. Twilight, on the other hand, showed no signs of loosening up beforehand. Indeed, since the damage was already done before Twilight actually went to Ponyville, Moondancer would have gone on the same path had Twilight never been sent there.

At best, Moondancer is understood as a worse version of pre-friendship Twilight.

Actually, looking back at your quote now, you never claim that Moondancer was symbolic of Twilight's past from, say, a literary standpoint, merely that it is similar. Perhaps I should have directed it towards Auz instead of you (which influenced my perception of your claim).

And then again, symbols don't have to be perfect in order to have their effect.

Ok, I see where you were coming from. Yeah I didn't mean to imply that Moon Dancer was wholly characteristic of an alternate timeline of Twilight's life, regardless if it seemed that way. Only that the two would have essentially had the same fate if not for the events of Friendship is Magic.
