You don’t have a name like “Terramar” and not expect to be split between two worlds. (French exists in the Pony universe, so why not Latin?)

This was apparently a leaked episode, and there has been commentary that this is the closest the show is going to get in addressing the feelings children go through when their parents divorce, and I certainly see where they are coming from. Of course, Terramar’s parents are merely separated for whatever reason (and there are no ill feelings between them), but the symbolism is certainly still there. It is actually Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo that take the role of the divorcing parents here, who, in obsessing too much over their own selfish appraisals of their favored places, forget about “their child,” who is left wondering if his “parents still love him.” The biggest thing that makes it dissimilar—and a critical one—is that Terramar always knew he had complete freedom to choose when IRL children don’t directly dictate the terms of their parent’s divorce arrangements, which doubtless also contributes to the child’s feelings. We certainly can still empathize with his feelings that he felt he had to choose. I do wonder, however, if distinguishing between “selfish-minded parents” and “selfless-minded parents” is of much comfort to at least some children who may analogize the situation, as there are indeed parents who don’t always have the best interests of the child in mind even if they can separate their love for their spouse from their love of the child. But even I don’t think the episode could have explored the nuances of that in 30 minutes, and it’s ultimately not that big of a problem precisely because many divorce resolutions do turn on shifting the parent’s perspectives from their identities as spouses to that as parents. (Of course, we can also see this episode as a metaphor for transgenderism or some other “I feel I need to fit into one box or another” situation and most of the problems raised go away, but the divorce analogy fits slightly better from the episode’s development.)

Another thing that’s curious: The transforming pearl in the movie wasn’t all that big, smaller than a pony’s head. I found it a bit unbelievable that every hippogriff/seapony was able to get a necklace. Then again, Terramar’s internal conflict—and the moral—would be undercut if some couldn’t get a necklace, as it would have called into question why Terramar was so lucky and cause us to wonder whether there really was an objective reason that Terramar had to choose.

I could definitely see why Scootaloo favored the sea, but I have no idea why Sweetie Belle favored the land—it didn’t seem connected to any known aspect of her personality. It might have made slightly more sense if Apple Bloom was the one who fell in love with the land, but she already has too much of a reputation for neutrality to make that role believable.oh right, she was first attracted by the sound, and she is a singer. The pros and cons of the decision seem to balance in favor of the writer.

Miscellaneous: Twilight delivers the duh-hammer, and Applejack is starting to become less and less honest. The background music and scene work was great, and the main song, though clearly not necessary and not really forwarding the plot much (except by the end) wasn’t half bad. And overall, so much feel.

Weighing the pros and cons, I liked it.
