Also wonder how every future was different, even though the same stuff happened.
Something to do with butterflies and quants.
And perhaps they didn't stumble upon themselves, because it was not same past?

See? Timetravel is bad.
Everything is always connected in minute details. *nods*
..
Although I suddenly remember a scifi story where they travel back in time. Character #A says something about paradox of older and younger version of A existing same time, and that wouldn't universe have means to prevent such things. Character #B answers along lines of "Do you think that universe cares about such minute details as duplicates of same person".
Or perhaps history/time in Equestria is like history/time in Discworld. More of a suggestion than rule, and a mess, that's trying to be kept in order by secret society behind the scenes.
That's why there was both familiarity and discord. *nod*

"Those who reached my boundary, their seed is not; their hearts and their souls are finished forever and ever. As for those who had assembled before them on the sea, the full flame was their front before the harbour mouths, and a wall of metal upon the shore surrounded them. They were dragged, overturned, and laid low upon the beach; slain and made heaps from stern to bow of their galleys, while all their things were cast upon the water." - Ramesses III., Battle of the Delta
