I love how Steven wasn't even surprised at her story. Even he's getting tired of all the yutz moves his mom made.

I agree wholeheartedly, no pun intended.

At first I assumed she'd be a radical opposing the Diamonds' being less authoritarian, but I was surprised by her backstory.

Right? Also, whoever animated her really earned their paycheck. She was like a Cuphead boss. Awesome.

why didn't Steven just take the warp pad to Homeworld and ask the Diamonds for help, like pretty sure they could get rid of the big poisony thing and explain what was going on in 12 seconds

Also, it'd probably annoy the diamonds if they were constantly called from Homeworld to help out with a problem they consider to be a minor nuisance, which could cause problems with Steven and theirs relationship.

What disappoints me somewhat is that the animation in the rest of the film never lives up to

I feel like they probably never even met tbh. I imagine that Spinel was a replacement 'friend' for Pink because a Diamond isn't supposed to be friends with their Pearl. so White took away Pink Pearl and gave her a new Pearl, and Spinel as replacements.

It would also explain the fact that Pearl recognized Spinel but when later asked new nothing of Spinel's motives or any significant part of her backstory.

I've seen a few comics where the diamonds abandon Spinel almost immediately (like they did with Pink) and it was super sad and depressing until she meets Pink (or White?) Pearl.
But anyway they're both gems that have suffered extreme trauma from Pink's nonsense, so it makes sense that they'd kind of be best friends.

Ok serious question. Is the series worth actually watching? Because like I haven't watched any of the show and I'm kinda scared of the fandom in some places.
