I recently started watching it.

Pearl is my favorite

She really is an encapsulation of everything the series does right.

However, I do appreciate the other characters very much, and the show would do better to focus more on them.

The human characters are kinda tangentially boring compared to a lot of the Gems, which, yeah, you'd think there'd be more episodes about the Gems interacting with humans other than the Universes and Connie's family.

I kinda don't find a lot of impact in the show's apparent messages, especially if you're familiar with LGBT media. The show itself isn't particularly bold. Indeed, it downplays sexuality since, you know, it's supposed to be watchable by kids and presumably their adult relatives and friends.

Considering how much the show spends on the "slice-of-life" portions they should use those to analyze the characters more instead of trying to play them for comedic purposes.

Particularly you'll hate when focus abruptly shifts to the Townies for a few episodes between thrilling adventures. Though they do serve as building moments for those side characters

What exactly should I be watching out for in terms of what the Gems go through?

I would recommend watching in as close to chronological order as possible, but you're free to skim over some episodes that lack development for important characters or don't advance the main plot. There's probably an abridged watching list that tell you which episodes are necessary for a good time, but I don't actually know for certain.

The more I look at the show, the more I think it should either become an apocalyptic horror movie directed by Michael bay, or a horror Netflix series (like stranger things). I mean, shapeshifting alien space rocks that can merge into larger and more powerful alien space rocks sounds like a horror movie if you think about it.

I agree wholeheartedly, no pun intended.

At first I assumed she'd be a radical opposing the Diamonds' being less authoritarian, but I was surprised by her backstory.
