After being goaded into it by a few university friends, I've had the entirety of DragonBallZ: Kai on my "totally legitimate digital media" hard drive for about two years.
The other night, I started watching it.

What the fuck have I been watching.

The streamlined and filler-free version of a deeply flawed yet still fun and immensely influential shonen series that has had a massive impact on anime/manga and the wider pop culture.

(I do recommend looking up the "driving episode" from the original run though. It is pure filler, but it is gloriously hysterical.)

Well firstly, Krillen and 17 are even with Super Saiyan Blue Goku, while Gohan is even with SSjB Kaio-Ken Goku.

I think I can at least hold it off until after the dub gets through the Black arc, but curse my interest in what can only be described as 'speculative psychology.' Long story short, a short (one-shot or few-chapter) character study on Black and the whole "mind is a plaything of the body" trope after he first made his wish. I mean, I get the sneaking suspicion that in the original timeline Black came from, he didn't necessarily do all of the homework he probably should have on Saiyajins before going postal on Gowasu and doing all that crap, so there was likely something of an adjustment period dealing with what would be to him an incredibly alien biology.

Kinda, same principle, much longer/permanent duration. I mean, if he had done even a fraction of his homework first, he would probably have known or figured out important tidbit likes "Saiyajins + getting really fucking pissed off = MOAR POWAH!" way sooner than he did in the show. Nevermind the more mundane day-to-day minor details like "I'm pretty sure a Saiyajin needs a hell of a lot more calories a hell of a lot more often than kais do."

So Goku learned how to complete Super Saiyan Blue by holding all of his divine ki inside of him and increase his power dramatically.

Meaning Mastered Super Saiyan Blue is on par with Fused Zamasu.

Sidra destroyed an entire city, probably the first thing he's destroyed for quite a while. Universe 9's mortals learned of the erasure so they're in a panic. They only have 3 fighters too... Looks like they'll get destroyed before Universe 10, unlike what I originally thought. Sidra's Angel seems more serious than Sidra himself. The Zen-Ohs think that Universes 7 & 6 have good chances of winning... I didn't see THAT coming.

Speaking of Universe 6. Hit found Frost, who is on the run. Frost, thinking Hit was there to kill him put on an act where he accepted such a death but then he tried to shoot a poison needle at Hit, who of course being the best assassin in Universe 6 moved to the side slightly. The following attempt of an assault against Hit was also futile, even when he brought his needle-tipped tail into it. Frost is like Frieza in the sense that he won't accept death but that's to be expected, U6 & U7 are twin universes after all. Hit was of course there to recruit Frost, threatening to kill him if he refused. Frost accepted gladly, he thinks it'll restore his "honour."

Frost isn't going to be using his needles though, he had to pull them out after learning that a foul means instant erasure.

Oh, and Yamcha's bored. Then Roshi came along with Oolong but not to invite Yamcha to the team. Oh no, he wants Puar to shapeshift into a young girl so he can overcome his perverse nature... AKA: He wants to drop one of the things that we love about him. Turns out Roshi once traumatised Oolong when HE shapeshifted... Wow that's deep. Anyways, expect R34 of the form that Puar took. The sounds that they made while in that shed sounded... Messed up. Oolong also gave Yamcha false hope.

Yet again, poor Yamcha.

Meanwhile, Goku's training session with Whis in the Gravity Chamber was interesting. The only way Goku can damage stronger opponents is by biting them it seems. Damn, if the Saiyans knew their mouths were such deadly weapons they would've been able to take down Frieza.

Now over to Dyspo and Toppo in Universe 11. It's funny when Dragon Ball characters wear suits. Kahseral's apparently on an important mission,
saving Universe 11 cats.

Oh, and Helles has really done a good job on that beauty thing, it's PRETTY MUCH infected her universe. There, we meet two alien drag queens and Brionne, a gorgeous humanoid/fat thing idol/warrior whose transformation reminds me of magical girls and Pokémon Contests. Hell,
even her attacks are magical girl attacks.

A long transformation sequence just to kill some drag queens, wow. The Daishinkan wants the Zen-Oh's to watch the Strong Women.

And now it's over to our favourite Godtube Binger Gowasu, Pink Dumbo Rumoosh and Loli Cus. They have a full team! And we also see the Daishinkan do something inappropriate with his hand which will make us westerners laugh like crazy.

Anyways, Gowasu is recording a dance video of Cus and the U10 team for his Godtube. I'm not joking, GOWASU HAS A GODTUBE ACCOUNT.

Now back to U7.

Goku's sitting about with Whis and Beerus, the latter eating a delicious treat. Piccolo and Tien are meditating, Gohan and the Kaioshin are coming up with a strategy and Bulma's watching Bulla sleep until she gets a call from Mr Satan, although she just said "A Call From Satan".

And here comes the Buu plotpoint. Beerus wants to slap him awake because he has a grudge on Buu because of PUDDING! Meanwhile Goku TFS *popped* out of there.

And yet again we get the same construction footage.

Anyways, my verdict? Good Episode. TFS has some new Popo material too.

The U7 Team is in a panic, Caulifla goes Super Saiyan while Kale sits behind a rock smirking. Oh, Universe 3's doing a thing too.

Guys... I think Frieza's coming.

Magical girls in my Dragonball?! It's more likely than you think! Albeit kinda parodied. That'll be... interesting... at the tournament. I laughed way more than was strictly necessary at Popo threatening to ban Vegeta from the time chamber if he breaks it again. Abridged shoutout perhaps? Either way, TFS will no doubt get some mileage outta that one! It's kinda nice finally starting to get a real look at some of what the other teams will be bringing to bear, too. Anyone else think that Goku biting Whis may be the first time Goku's actually managed to injure the angel in a sparring match? Any time we've seen Whis actually fighting, there hasn't been the typical exchange of blows with both fighters taking damage, he just blocks or evades everything. XD

Interesting to see how Frost's apparently gotten on since the U6 vs U7 tournament. He's substantially more broken down mentally after however many months now on the run. He may have gotten more powerful or at least more skilled as a result, but I think he's not far off from a full blown villainous breakdown since unlike his U7 counterpart, he's always relied more on cheap, dirty tricks rather than how Frieza relies on his insane level of power. Assuming Frost doesn't take his chances on the needles despite Hit's warning, he might find himself in a rather unpleasant position during the fighting since he won't have those tricks to fall back on.

Canon female SSJs inbound!! Also, methinks the "lying about the tournament stakes/prize" thing is about to bite Goku firmly on the ass based on the teaser. One hell of a bait-and-switch about Buu though, unless they do manage to roust him. I mean, Buu is in all the artwork for the U7 team, he's in the opening and end themes for the arc, so either this is a fake scare and they succeed in waking the pink bastard up... or does this mean we'll see a change to the opening animation sequence like how there were minor changes to the first opening over time?

Uh.... okay, yeah, if that's what actually happens and isn't part of a massive troll, I cannot see this being a good idea. Even if he's not wished back and he's just issued a day pass as the halo implies, this is still a bad idea. He's not likely to willingly pitch in for nothing, and the asking price for his cooperation could well be too high to pay. Not to mention I could very easily see him pulling some shenanigans DURING the tournament amid all the chaos of the battle. After all, U7 just needs to win, I could readily see him trying to get Goku and/or Vegeta killed in the confusion.

If this isn't all one giant troll, this could lead to some... interesting character interactions/development assuming they don't fuck it up.

Frieza could be persuaded to play along given how he's terrified of Beerus. If Beerus says you're a good guy, you're a good guy and will play along or else... Yeah. But all the risks of it backfiring are insane and I look forward to it.

Thing is, even Beerus threatening to wipe Frieza from existence entirely might not be enough to coerce Frieza. His sanity took a big hit when he was bested at Namek, and the years in Hell have clearly done his already damaged sanity no favors. By now, after having lost a second time and gone back to that personal Hell, "completely unhinged" probably is a pretty accurate description.

And really, what does Frieza have to lose if he refuses? If he refuses and Beerus destroys him or if U7 loses the tournament, either way, the outcome is the same for him: complete annihilation. He's unhinged enough I could see him agreeing to participate and then actively sabotaging the U7 team. Throwing the tournament would be the ultimate "Taking you with me" to literally every one of his tormentors. Besides Goku and Vegeta, it's literally the best/only way he has to strike out at the likes of Beerus. As evidenced both by the battle with Goku on Namek and the battle with Goku and Vegeta in the RoF arc, Frieza is most definitely petty enough to resort to extreme measures like that if it means taking out those he really wants to take out.

Or Vegito Blue is signifcantly weaker then we all thought

Well Manga Vegito toyed with Zamasu the whole time and was stated to surpass Beerus, so I just think Manga Zamasu is significantly weaker.

This Mastered Super Saiyan Blue almost seems like the Manga version of Kaio-Ken too, because it's unstable and untested, plus Goku can't hold onto it for very long.

nah, it started off strong but ever since Zamasu fused in the manga it's gone straight down the tube. there's so many stupid things, I didn't think it was possible for it to have so many dumb things. I thought for sure the manga version was gonna be better, but nah.
