Sadly yeah, one of the series' biggest flaws is the narrative inconsistencies, whether resulting from Toriyama's shortcomings or due to executive meddling. There's some really cool ideas, they just get clumsy or lackluster execution, especially in the Android and Buu sagas. =/

Buu (for me) is unwatchable after the main villain is unveiled, ironically. It collapses under its own weight, pun intended.

I could get behind that. It did kinda completely gut the emotional impact of that scene and his sacrifice by having it be completely in vain, and barely any good as even a delaying maneuver. Like, at least let it have demolished Buu so thoroughly that it takes him some time to reconsolidate himself, giving everybody that false sense of victory before the Big Bad reveals he wasn't actually dead. I mean, look how effective it was with "Yay, the Spirit Bomb took out Frieza- OSHIT" and "Cell is dead, Earth is safe- *cue the screaming of angry future Trunks fangirls everywhere*" in the previous sagas.

EDIT TO ADD: Also, +1 for other because future Trunks fangirl here, History of Trunks ftw, Battle of Gods in second place.

*sweatdrops* Speaking of the Buu saga... I had forgotten since the last time I watched it just how embarrassingly dorky Gohan is about the whole superhero thing when he first got the suit. The way he behaves about it in stuff like Xenoverse somehow manages not to be as cringe-inducing in its sheer dorkiness as he is in the show, and watching DBZ Kai tonight just reminded me.

I don't see why Turles is so popular for the exact same reason. Literally just an evil Saiyan, which was super common at the time. The ToM itself was an interesting idea at least. Turles and even Janemba are pretty standard Doomsday villains.

At least Janemba had a unique powerset.
