But seriously, why are they overrated? I rarely see Venom shirts OR fans, all I hear is that they are overrated without anything to back it up. Seems like they're just another band where overrated simply means that person doesn't like them.

I disagree. Out of the classic BM records Blaze and Panzerfaust are the only unique ones Funeral Moon and Transilvanian Hunger are simply Blaze slightly rearanged

A Blaze In The Northern Sky is the best starting place imo. It's not quite as "trve grim kvlt" sounding as the following albums. It's a bit more accessible to newcomers because of the death metal influence and memorable songwriting. And the drums and riffs kick infinite ass. Any metal fan should be able to groove to "The Pagan Winter" and "In The Shadow of the Horns".

At least Iron Maiden can write songs.

Venom were influential in the early evolution of extreme metal, I give them credit for that, but they would be a mere footnote in history if they released the same music in a later decade. Compared to the bands they would inspire, like Slayer, Venom were barely competent on their instruments - and are certainly nothing special as far as songwriting and variety go. They're not "shitty" like Halfordia said (I enjoy "Buried Alive" and "Welcome To Hell"), but I just don't think their music alone warrants their legendary status.

If you've never seen a Venom Black Metal shirt at a concert, I'd be astounded There's always one.

You know, I was thinking about something. My friend and I were listening to "Meiserlou" by Dick Dale the other day, and I jokingly said, "We should make our own genre called Surf Metal and base it off this."

We had a good laugh, but, now that I'm thinking about it, something like that could be really cool sounding.
