For your information, women have far superior singing voices (in my own honest opinion), and there need to be more (intelligible) female singers in rock and metal.

Besides that, growling is still and will always be the dumbest form of vocals there are. Seriously. They might as well just not sing at all, it wouldn't change anything. What the fuck is the point of singing if no one can understand what the fuck you're saying?

Also, I joke about death metal just being a bunch of cookie monsters all the time, so I don't really see that as an insult. Just a joke. And it's practically true for most of the bands.

Also, I like female and male vocalists about the same, but 90% of the female vocals in metal I've heard bore me. I WISH they were more interesting but most I find just aren't...

I'm so sorry that tough strong women who can scare men with their talent aren't allowed to be in the metal community. Angela Gossow, Alissa White-Gluz, and Satan knows how many others who I really should listen to (someone give me some good "female fronted" death or black metal please!) better get back in the kitchen where they belong! Since I haven't memorized every single metal amp out there, I'll have to get back to you on that, but I'll be looking through a few amp brands I know and see if anything comes close. Keep in mind that an overdrive/distortion pedal helps a lot too, in case you get an amp that doesn't quite meet your distortion standards. What's your price range (in other words, what's the most you're willing/able to pay)?

Harsh vocals can enhance the: energy, atmosphere, emotion, aggression, sorrow, power, etc. etc. etc. of a song even if they are unintelligible. The feelings metal creates are often primal, and a primal vocal part often fits best. And plenty of harsh vocals ARE intelligible.

So Johan Hegg recently typed up his own short little guide to Vikings.

It's short but I enjoyed reading it. The main thing I took out of it is his view on religion. I completely agree with it. But the most interesting part of it for me was how he talks about being inspired by Norse Paganism and immediately I thought of the photos there are of him wearing a Mjölnir necklace and all the stuff he shares on Facebook of Grimfrost (they make all sorts of cool Viking shit), and that just kind of clicked with me. I feel like a lot of religions have something you could take away, and there's no shame in being inspired by Paganism or Christianity or Satanism or Buddhism or whatever else. I guess the reason this kind of clicked with me was because I've been in a sort of religious limbo for the past couple years. I identify as Catholic, but really I'm not all that Christian or Pagan, but I'm also far from an atheist and I can't call myself agnostic. So this just kind of reminded me that religion isn't a stone-set kind of thing, and if I get inspired by stormy weather and the old tales of gods and such, I'm completely okay with doing that as well as also respecting Christianity.

And that relates back to metal because ultimately being metal also means having your own beliefs and not conforming to anything, and I can now say that yes I do still consider myself mildly religious, but just not specifically Christian or any other religion in particular.

Exactly. No matter if you're clean singing, screaming, growling, shrieking, shouting, yarling, doing wimpy Asking Alexandria crap, whatever the fuck...the voice is in the end just another instrument.

For the sake of argument, let's compare clean singing to an acoustic guitar and growling to heavy distortion. Obviously to the initiate's ear the softer, simpler one will sound better.

And I can't imagine Cannibal Corpse having Rob Halford sing their brutally disgusting lyrics over such heavy...err...metal!

A lot of it is just getting rid of stereotypes that have been in the process of being rid of for a while now. It's still good to know he's not taking the Viking image TOO seriously. Especially when it comes to religion.
