A while back I thought that I was the only one here that liked them, but it seems that I am not at all alone.


The Aura = best Techdeath album IMO. (I have said this once before, but it is necessary to say it again)

To be honest the first time I heard BC I thought that their music was pretty boring and I wasn't a big fan on some of the vocals, but after giving them a second try my opinion completely changed. After hearing their albums in full I was completely blown away by the quality of musicianship and their ability to actually write a good song, which is often the weakness for many Techdeath bands.

That describes my experience with them perfectly; I'm by no means a tech death fan because of the issue of actual songwriting, but BC's songs are actually... songs. Took me a bit to get into them; I still need to listen to Earthborn Evolution. But yeah, The Aura is easily my favorite tech death album as well.

Totally agree with you there. If a Techdeath band can make an album close to an hour long (with the inclusion of longer songs) and be enjoyable to listen to throughout, then it is undoubtedly a good band. As for Earthborn Evolution it is also a fantastic album, but I will honestly say that it's nowhere near as good as The Aura. (But then again, what is?)

In other news, I take back a bit of what I've said about death metal. It's not as atrocious as I claimed, and the average death metal band isn't completely inept when it comes to playing instruments (though they all tend to sound pretty much the same), and while I dislike death growls, I find them much more tolerable than black metal shrieking.

Trust me, it took me a while to get used to it. I'm pretty sure some of us in this thread have seen my own evolution on it. But yes, most of them sound the same. But that can be said for 90% of bands ever, in their respective genres.

Seriously, that shrieking is fucking annoying as hell. How do you people listen to that and not go deaf?

I used to find it annoying. I still do on a lot of bands, and there's plenty I have been turned off from because the vocals don't grab me enough, despite the fact the bands supposed to be interesting. Same with death metal. But I can tolerate them a lot more.

You should try Dir en Grey . They have some of the typical death metal vocal elements, but the main vocalist just goes batshit insane someone and it's awesome (To me, anyway). I think they were the main start of me getting into those kinds of genres.

On an unrelated note, what do you guys think of Grand Magus?

Loved their Triumph and Power album. Haven't listened to much beyond that. My favorite songs are Steel Versus Steel, Triumph and Power and The Naked and the Dead.

Beyond Creation is one of those bands that really deserves more attention. Maybe it was the fact that they lost the awesome Dominique, who in my opinion really made The Aura stand out. Arguably pretty close to 10/10. Earthborn Evolution is more of a standard 9/10 but still. SO MUCH POTENTIAL.

That's cute. I have several longer songs in my library. Crimson by Edge of Sanity is my favorite at 40 minutes.

And Ensiferum is Folk Metal first and foremost, with power and melodeath as secondary genres. Depends on the song, but I'd say there is slightly more power metal than melodeath. "Wanderer" is a straight up power metal song. Harsh vocals =\= death metal.

I applaud you for becoming more tolerant of harsh vocals though. Jari is one of the best in the business. He is also the vocalist/guitarist for Wintersun. I'm a total fanboy. What's your favorite Ensiferum song so far, Kar?
