"Those who reached my boundary, their seed is not; their hearts and their souls are finished forever and ever. As for those who had assembled before them on the sea, the full flame was their front before the harbour mouths, and a wall of metal upon the shore surrounded them. They were dragged, overturned, and laid low upon the beach; slain and made heaps from stern to bow of their galleys, while all their things were cast upon the water." - Ramesses III., Battle of the Delta

There was some good potential in this episode, but they totally dropped the ball. They were afraid to delve all the way into the psychoanalysis, so the episode is just a meandering mess with no real point. It could have been so much better with just a little effort. 4/10

Which has
nothing to do with the notion that she expended a minuscule effort. Maybe she did indeed work harder than the Crusaders. Plus, everypony deserves a cutie mark.

It was a Josh Haber episode, who tends to have a lack of imagination when it comes to expanding on the basic idea of an episode, so I'm not too surprised. Agree that they could have done more.

To be honest, I am never able to put forth the effort to write down a proper detailed analysis of an episode. I just either like it or I don't, no more no less as long as I see my favorite ponies *cough*The Princesses*cough* on screen.

I love that excuse. Always trotted out when people have logical complaints about the episodes. It's the equivalent of the old "*Snort* Magic!" gag.

This show has a reputation for expanding the boundaries for the target audience, why not do it here?

For example, they could have probed more into the factors that made Apple Bloom have such worries about her cutie mark.

If you want to know what I really think. Honestly I agree that the whole "Will they, won't they get their cutie mark?" shtick is tired out. Hel, it's been tired out after Season 2. I'm actually kind of interested in what getting a new cutie mark entails. Does the newly minted pony instantly becomes a master at his or her special talent, or do they have to work at it? Is there a Master/Mentor (or Apprentice) kind of deal that goes into this? Or does the pony instantly gets all the knowledge that he or she will ever need when they get their cutie marks.

As for Babs Seed. Honestly, Apple Bloom, Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo are working very hard, but maybe that's the problem. Maybe they're working too hard and they're not stepping back and looking at the bigger picture. Every time we have one of these episode, the message has always been to be true to yourself. Instead what does the trio of CMC do? They try to excel at things that are not true to who they are. Maybe Babs Seed was being true to herself and found her special talent that matched her personality.

I think it's fundamentally clear that ponies still have to hone their talents, though they may already be stellar at it to begin with. Twilight had to, RD had to, Pinkie had to. I don't see why it should be different for any of the Crusaders.

If Babs Seed was true to herself, her Cutie Mark would be a word bubble that says "I'm a Bitch". But because she has an ugly fucking haircut, it counts as her special talent. The fact that she did nothing to earn it is complete bullshit, while they keep rehashing this goddamn "Be true to yourself" bullshit over and over and over and over and over again!

Because it's not sinking in for Apple Bloom, Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo. Those three are denser than Tom.

To be fair, how deep can you go into psychoanalysis in a show for children?

Symbionic Titan, a show for kids, had an amazing episode call "I am Octus" that delved into the nature of self and what it means to be a sapient being. It explored the concept of whether or not an AI can be considered a person. It did all this in a tone and language that clearly and plainly laid everything out. Now sure, the kids aren't going to understand the existentialist ramifications for us, but I'm sure they understood the bulk of what the show was trying to say.

Kids aren't stupid. They're ignorant and inexperienced, but they aren't stupid. They can understand things that are adequately explained. Kids' shows don't need to be mindless and one-dimensional for them to be understandable.
