I just finished watching the final two episodes of the 4th season (online) and I have to say that it wrapped up the story of Korra very nicely. Now, instead of looking back at all her defeats and losses in every season to each new villain and seeing someone weaker than Aang and not as strong, I now see a person who needed four full seasons to mature. the Julie and verik (or however you spell there names) marriage I quite liked.

Yeah, Firebender again. And I'm not joking. Although some questions were bizarre and some plain obvious. For example it asks what is your favourite colour. How obvious is that? (I chose black by the way, it didn't have gold)

So at this point I'm six seasons into the franchise and I'm only now wondering why pretty much every single named character we have ever seen on this show is some sort of fucking black belt.

It's tied to how bending works/is used. Also, Mai and Tai Lee were upper class companions to Azula so while they weren't benders themselves they were probably put through something broadly equivalent to Azula's firebending instruction.

Characters who aren't benders (for instance, Wu) lack these skills, for the most part. Sokka's kind of another example.

There are probably some exceptions that can't be explained via military training... although the skill level may be the bigger issue.

No, I get that most everyone with crazy combat skills in the universe has a good reason to have them. It just seems a bit strange that the producers didn't really include anyone who doesn't have them. I mean, yeah, war and all that, but you'd think there'd be at least a couple more people in the world who were important, competent, and not evil without being able to take down a small army.
