The political ideolgoy(ies) in the book are both interesting and beutifully scary. I can't help but feel a mixed sense of fear and admiration for the Party, although I would not like to see it put into effect; it would be one hell of a word.

I'm just about done with it myself. I won't spoil it for you because it might spoil your read. But it is very good.

After this I'll be moving onto Animal Farm and back into Stephen King.

I read it last year, but I don't remember that much of it. However, it is a great inspiration for a dystopia.

It's not meant to be an 'enjoyable read'. It's a book that you're meant to sit down and think about. A warning and a threat.

It's got a certain dark beauty, the land of Ingsoc and newpseak.

My all-time favourite book. The last paragraph of the book is one of the greatest things I have ever read. Beautiful, yet depressing- amazing novel, amazing ending. Orwell was a genius.

That the book's message is true at any given time in history, what with all the hypocrisy and lying going on.

i loved the book...until i finished it and then i felt disappointed. Though the book, for the most part, was great. The love note part was great and surprised me a little for I thought she was tooo involved in party dealings to even consider winston but ehh anything can happen in a world with an onmipresent government that watches your every move...yep anything

Well the purpose of the book isn't to make you feel good or happy, it's to scare the shit out of you and make you think about the world and how easy it is to fall into a world like the one in which Winston Smith inhabits. It's a warning to lovers of liberty and freedom, a promotion of democratic socialism, and a scathing indictment of Stalinism, Fascism, Nazisim, and any other form of totalitarianism. Happy endings are for Hollywood.

Like North Korea? They even have radios in the kitchen that play party propaganda or martial music 24/7 that can never be turned off. Orwell is rolling in his grave.

1984 is beyond shadow of a doubt my absolute favourite book of all time. It has influenced nearly every aspect of my thinking, and barely a day goes by without me dwelling on one of its many dark, psychological yet strangely idealistic themes. Is the Ingsoc society actually a Utopia rather than a Dystopia? Absolute destruction of the self has meant that everyone is equal, and suffering is dished out as equally as wealth. With Doublethink, each member of society could follow the Party line without question or division; it's the ultimate vision of unity.

But then I found myself wondering this: what's the point in a society that "moves forward together"? Is it for the sake of science? Is it for space travel? Is it just to make people easier for governmental forces to mold? I can't answer any of this speculation, but I'd love to hear other people's opinions on these themes raised by 1984.

What if I put it in spoiler tags? That's what they are for.

You naughty boy, finish the book yerself.
The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds.- Carl Sagan

The sad part is that "democratic" governments are prone to exactly the same kind of politics as Ingsoc. It's all about corruption, not idelogies.

Anyway... the book is amazing. Anyone feeling dissapointed by it should have seen it coming from the get go.
The government is all reaching, all controlling, and absolutely ruthless... and all humans are feeble sooner or later, and our main character is so, which you can read from the start. There's no other way for the book to end.

On a personal note, this was the first story (of any kind) in which I identified with a female character. Being a heterosexual male in a pretty much misoginist society, and only 15 years old when I read it... I was blown away.
