Hey there!

Anime is a whole medium of artistic creation, so the best question to start with is what genre's you're into. If you could tell us that we can better tailor our answers to you. No doubt what happened elsewhere is a bunch of people who like a bunch of different genres started fighting as they tried to recommend their genre's work, while dismissing the others. So, do you like comedy? Action? Romance? Drama? Mystery?

There are definitely some anime classics out there you should watch. My personal starting recommendation would be Cowboy Bebop, as it has a good English dub, and is basically anime Space Western. Others will no doubt have other recommendations, but a bit of feedback will help us choose some shows that'd be right for you.

Why? If one has huge backlog this is very valid method. You'll watch them all anyways at some point.

Only waste your time on quality stuff. There's enough quality that you shouldn't need to randomly choose anime for years.

That's why I only download quality stuff so the above method is more than valid for me

I have downloaded based on specific recommendations given to me through various ways, so I'd hope I would enjoy most of them.

Trust me, Nozaki-kun is worth your time. Its insanely, bust-your-gut funny. Plus, its a short 13 episodes long. Watch it and ignore everything else. You won't regret it.

Finished both seasons of Stand Alone Complex, am still disappointed with most the Ghost in the Shell series besides the 1st movie, however I wasn't totally disappointed.
Major still kicked ass, but I never really saw her as the same Major in the movie, the show made her too much of a person, too human. In the movie her lack of human identity drove most of her later actions, while the show just had her doing stuff that would uncover the old man in the ghost costume trying to steal the land deeds. And he would've gotten away with it too, if it weren't for those meddling Tachicomas
Overall, the Laughing Man episodes in the first season were the strongest, the side stories were hit and miss, and the 2nd season was OK I guess.
But the 2nd season had one of the most adorable villains I had ever seen, he was just so evil and token that I just wanted to hug him and take him home and name him Jerry.

However, you cannot deny how good Whitefox handled adapting the plot and storyline of the Steins;Gate visual novel to an entertaining and good anime. Perhaps, Whitefox has actually a talent in adapting visual novels, unlike for example, maybe JC Staff?

Light novels and poem games are generally pretty shitty, so one can assume their quality when they become anime.

In other news, I fucking love SNAFU. Best show I've seen in a while. The first season is pretty good, and the second is just more of the same.
