Well, Tirek didn't need Discord; what he needed was for Discord not to be helping the people he was up against.
The Dazzlings couldn't have known beforehand, but without Sunset Shimmer's help to the mane six the evil plan would've gone succeeded; Sunset stopped the mane six from splitting via argument, and helped them in the finale.

The problem, though, was that Discord was easier to turn. He hadn't fully become good (and still hasn't). He sort of missed being bad. Meanwhile, Sunset had changed so much that she loathed who she used to be. An attempt to turn her would have been much less successful and might have tipped their hand too early. As it stood, Sunset only figured out their plan when it was almost too late, but such a blatant attempt to break the group apart may have led her to realize their goal sooner and, thus, more easily put a stop to it. Trying to seduce Sunset to the dark side would have been an unnecessary risk.
Also, with Tirek and Discord, there was no risk at all. Everyone already knew Tirek's plan. Even if he had failed to turn Discord, it wouldn't have hurt him any worse. Trying to turn Discord could only benefit him.

I think failing to turn Discord would've been fatal to his plan. He was still pretty weak when Discord found him.

Yes, worse, because Discord was there to stop him. His options at that point were flip Discord or go back to Tartarus.Slorch wrote:

Take a look at this image. Dead center is the moon as it appears in the first episode of the first season.

Lolwat? Discord was there to stop Tirek. If Tirek did nothing, his plan would have failed. If he tried to turn Discord and failed, his plan would have failed. The latter is not worse than the former, and I have no idea how you can claim otherwise.

He hates Tolkien.
I hate him.
He hates everything. If you enjoy something he hates, he hates it even more just to cancel you out. If he bothers you that badly, block him, because he's not going to stop. He may even take it as a challenge.
