Hmm...

I thought I remembered watching this series and noticing him doing something to wood and thinking "Hey, he can't do that."

Then again, I am most liekly miss-remembering.

the closest I can recall was in "Library of the dead" , River's screwdcriver punched a hole in a wall... but to be fair, it's hard to say if the wall was made of wood or a simulated material.

Keeping in mind that River probably modified it and added a few nastier features.

That's a sonic blaster, or a "squareness gun", and Captain Jack used it as well.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised - these past two have been awful.

Which is a lot less than I would expect from Whithouse and Chibnall.

They were quite goofy.

The thing is, I think the show works better serialized - more opportunity to flesh the plot out.

Is there anything particularly wrong with the Doctor having an almost childlike wonder sometimes?

That's basically who he is - a kid with some wit, a time machine, and twenty tons of awesome.

It's particularly evident in the Eleventh's character, but it has always been there.

What's wrong is when he turns up (as in Asylum of the Daleks) and tries to act all serious. No, Matt Smith. I have learned to tolerate you. I have even begun to enjoy your presence, indeed, eventually, I might even like you. But please continue to act goofy and silly and not at all serious. Please?

This does not in any way imply that my overall perception of AotD was negative...

Matt doesn't do serious like a normal person - which is really quite intentional.

William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee want a word.

From Baker on, yes. But before that he was always mainly a grouchy old man.

Troughton was likely the most chidlike of them all in a way - he was very self-righteous, yes, but he was still filled with the same glee. Pertwee, too, though he didn't get to show it as much.

Hartnell on occasion as well - The Romans and such.

I did say mainly. The childishness was there but it was on a much more infrequent basis.

Then Baker changed everything, which isn't necessarily bad.

But the Shansheeth were never in Doctor Who!

They were in SJA, which is a spin-off, and the episode featured the Doctor. Also, the actor played Solomon in Dinosaurs on a Spaceship.

Solomon was a good villain for that one shot. Expansive species can get boring sometimes.

Solomon was awesome, best villain for the series and actually made the episode kinda good. Sure the Indian Space Agency was stupid for simply throwing in a minority, but I did like Solomon.

Wonder what the Doctor would do if he ever met Gordon Geko. Kick his balls up his throat?

Silently hate him - the Doctor doesn't kill things until they take out a few planets.

Dinosaurs
is one of my favorite episodes ever. Its Jurassic Park with comedy, a villain with logical motives, and New-Wilf, as Brian shall henceforth be called.

Brian is fucking awesome. I wish that he'd be the new companion, fucking hilarious. Then again- I've always loved Rory as a character, and the same goes with his dad. Amy is easy used up and makes for dull annoying episodes.

Remember what happened with Wilf? Close relative of the companion, started showing up more and more until BAM! he's one of the main characters in a two-part special featuring the death of the Doctor.
