You're welcome. They're the band that got me into emotional hardcore/emo about 14 years ago and I've never looked back since. I can post some more 'skramz'-ish stuff if you'd like.

Yeah, recs for similar stuff would be more than welcome. It's not a genre I've explored much.

Soviet Haaregrad wrote: skramz = what real "screamo" started to call itself when MTV started calling any poppy metalcore band with songs about girls "screamo".

I know, but I'm stubborn and am not going to let MTV redefine screamo. To me, screamo = skramz.

I'm not really into punk rock, but I do like some Green Day songs, especially "American Idiot" and "Boulevard of Broken Dreams".

Green Day might have started as a punk rock band, but had turned into a poppy alternative band long before that album came out.

If you want some pop-punk you should give NoFX a listen. Early Propagandhi is really good pop-punk, their newer stuff somehow meshes pop-punk and thrash metal together in a really interesting way.
Epitaph and Fat Wreck Chords are two labels with loads of pop-punk, some of which doesn't suck.

To me pop-punk is so f'n lame. It's really just pop music.

I consider NoFX as a skate-punk band.

Got to go to Riot Fest this past weekend and saw a lot of really fucking awesome punk related music.

NOFX (pop-punk forefathers)
Title Fight (pop-punk that fucking rips)
Pity Sex (emo/shoegaze)
Modern Baseball (fucking love this fucking band)
The Front Bottoms (more indie/emo; my favorite show of the weekend)
Circa Survive (post-hardcore/emo)
Pianos Become The Teeth (enough said)
TWIABPAIANLATD (also known as The World Is, unforgettable emo/post-rock)
Say Anything (the eighth grade version of me was jumping for joy)
La Dispute (whoa)
Cerebral Ballzy (throwback hardcore punk)
Dads (damn good emo; I love when drummers are also lead singers)
Tiny Moving Parts (more great emo; new album is amazing)

If anyone wants to talk more about emo/screamo, please lets do.

I would love to see these bands live, especially La Dispute. Rooms of the House is phenomenal. Jealous of you.

Thanks. I already knew several of those names but just hadn't checked them out yet. Others were new to me. Will probably check Hot Cross first since its similar to Saetia, which I loved.

La Dispute was pretty ethereal. One of the few hardcore bands I've seen that can find a balance between calm and chaos. As for the list provided by Haaregrad, Hot Cross is a great place to start. Risk Revival will end up being one of the genre's defining albums when it's all said and done. I recommend moving Circle Takes the Square upwards on your priority list along with iwrotehaikusaboutcannibalisminyouryearbook. They represent two ends of a very intriguing spectrum (the former being really melodic and the latter being a nonstop thrash of terror). And both bands are sad as hell, which is great.

True. I feel that a lot of the pop punk bands forget the whole anti-corporation thing. I mean punk doesn't have just one sound, but amongst all the different styles, punk shares anti-coporation and subversive sentiments. Without such sentiments it's not really punk, so much as it is a novelty.

Punk doesn't have to be political. Bands like Ramones or Television are almost completely apolitical and are still seen as icons of the genre

DIY isn't political though, and it's at the very heart of punk rock. A lot of the pop pretending to be punk bands don't come off as though they're familiar with doing things themselves, independently; they're no different from any other pop-rock band that works to get signed on a big label and get the big label commercial push that comes with it. Some of those bands *cough*Good Charlotte*cough* don't even write their own songs.

At that point what makes them any different from any other manufactured pop act?

Converge and Botch are the obvious big names. Dillinger Escape Plan and Between the Buried are some "respectable" modern metalcore bands, as I'm sure you know.

I'm no expert on the genre, but here's some lesser known ones I like. Real old school metallic hardcore.
Integrity
Vision of Disorder
Rorschach
Glassjaw (maybe not so much metalcore, but still good)

I wouldn't call any of that metalcore, but crust punk is another metal+punk crossover genre.

Other good crust bands:
His Hero Is Gone
From Ashes Rise
Aus-Rotten
One Eyed-God Prophecy
Oroku
Severed Head of State
Tragedy (ex-HHIG, but more d-beat influenced)
Union of Uranus
World Burns To Death

There's also Shikabane, from Japan, they're like if emo, powerviolence and black metal had a love child.
